1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Time to sell the Tundra???", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
The benefits of having a truck far outweigh the cost of gas to put in it.
This is the camp I reside in. My truck isn't my primary mode of transportation though. It simply makes my life more convenient, and fun. Yes, fun, 'cuz I do think driving my truck is fun. But an important point to make is that it's paid for. So my situation may differ vs others, but as said, the benefits are real for me.
I've been considering buying a cheap beater car to commute around with, but I'll never sell the truck. Bought it at 19 and love the thing too d@mn much to ever get rid of it.

My problem is that I do need a truck for work from time to time but I also drive about 40,000 miles a year so currently I spend almost $10,000 a year in gas. Most "experts" say that within 2-3 years gas will be at $8-$10/ gallon. that is roughly $23,000 a year in gas for me. Not exactly in the budget and even if I made that kind of money I don't want to spend it on gasoline.
I thought about it for about two seconds but then decided the cost of having a second vehicle, insurance, registration, maintenance, cleaning, something not as safe / comfortable, etc... made me decide it was easier just to cut back on the driving a little bit instead and drive what I want.
[quote=skinny2;1008987]There's not a lot of people BUYING trucks right now because of the shock factor. My truck has dumped $5,000 in value since December. It can't keep dropping that fast
Ask the guy who gave 50+k for the 05 Dodge that I gave 31.5k for in May 06 with 1800 miles on it how fast they can drop.I was patting myself on the back for taking my 28k out of it and buying the 23k Tundra with 10,000 miles until a couple days ago when I noticed Edmonds says my 06 Tundra is only worth 17k trade and gas hit $3.60 for regular.
The Dodge would cost almost .50cents a mile for gas now,so I still got a slight smile.
But I started driving the Kia I bought because I couldn't afford to drive the Dodge again last week because the Tundra is costing too much now!

hi, Ltning: you made the right move.
if it ever gets to 8+dollars per gallon. good god, i don't care how much you make, & how much you love your truck, if you do not use it for work related issue's.
you will have no choise to either use it only when you need it.
but you as many other's will be in seach for a 2nd vehicle that gets 30 to 50 miles per gallon. that just makes since.
i just can't see myself in a tiny car.
there death trap's.
especailly if i had small children, thank god my kids are grown.
i can't imagine trying to save a few bucks in gas and by doing so, i got into a crash and the car thats the size of a mini or smaller, would help save my child's life.
air bags, crunch zones, etc. they will crumble up into a small box, or worse tear apart.
hey it's your money, and your family's life.
i try my best to keep them as safe as possible. like i'm sure all of you would.
but what are all of us going to do, when gas on average will cost us per week 200 to 300 per week. 10per gallon X 26 gallons to fill the tank = 260 per tank full.
there plastic tanks. i'd bet there will be a HUGE gas problem. many people will be ice picking gas tanks at night. stealing tanks of gas. better put 1" heavy guage steel platting around the whole tank and all it's gas line's.

And where did you get this information?
Funny thing is, people in other countries have paid a lot more (not 8-10) for gas for a lot longer than we have and we still whine like babies when it goes up. To top all that off, we continue to give the oil companies billion dollar tax breaks while they make record profits...see problem?

I don't care how much gas costs... my truck is paid for! You can't buy a decent car for under $20k these days....

what "experts" most likely gas will level out at under $4 and be that way for a while. The industry is just raking in the dough. Our reserves are sky high and gas could go for $2 and they would still profit. This is nothing more than a "the sky is falling" situation trying to break consumers dependancy on gas.... ain't working for me chicken little! When you all sell your trucks and gas levels out I will blow by your prius driving azz in my tundra laughing!

My wife and I solved our problem by buying a 98 Chevy Prizm aka (Toyota Corolla) and absolutely love it for our everyday run around car, but we both wish we could drive the Tundra more often. All I can say is that the rich get richer, and the middle class get poorer. As far as the claim by DH, People in other countries are also paid more towards the cost of living. Here in the US how many working class people do you know have gotten raises to offset the higher cost of living, do to the greed of the oil companies? I can tell you that eight years ago my wifey and I had much more debt and less pay than we do now, but yet we have less disposible income to spend on things like a vacation, or buying something for our home. Our gas in Louisville, KY is $3.85 a gallon, I don't know about any of you, but that hurts rather you're driving a truck or a compact. By the way we the people were the dumb A$$es that wanted a second term of an oil company owner, you'd thaught we would've learned the 1st 4 years.
All "the sky is falling" prophecies. If you TRULY can't afford to drive it, then get rid of it. If you can afford it, then I would keep it, since you will be unhappy driving something smaller to save on gas. It's not the oil companies, it's not Bush (and yes I'm republican, and no I don't really agree with most of what Bush has done, but let's not just start throwing blame here). It's a combination of our weakening dollar, demand, and the OIL PRODUCING COUNTRIES.
If you want to blame politicians, blame them for really not supporting drilling off the coast of Florida and Anwr, and although they're only temporary solutions, they would at least alleviate our dependence for the short term, and lower the prices until a suitable long term alternative could be developed.
you can pry my tundra from my cold dead hands....
gas will never dictate what i drive. it all costs in the end one way or another.
There is worse things in my life to worry about, that I CAN control.
