Default Re: Time to sell the Tundra???

I imagine a fair number of pickup truck owners (not just Tundra's) are thinking the same thing. In my situation I have a lease expiring in 2 weeks. and have been agonizing wether to give up my 05 4x4 access cab or turn it in and walk away. I only have 19,000 miles and have taken care of it because I wanted to keep it. The buyout is $17,000. That price equates to about $375.00 a month for 48 months financing $16,000 ($1,000.00 down). 48 months is a long time to be Locked into payments and full coverage insurance on a large truck considering the volatile situation with fuel prices. My brain says let it go but my heart wants to keep it. I have researched just about all the pickup trucks out there and I would have to say that the Tundra I have gets better gas mileage than most. (excluding 4cyl.) In warm weather, driving real easy I get around 15mpg in city driving. On the Hwy I get about 20mpg never going over 2000rpm (65mph). I only live about 3 1/2 miles from work. If I lived out in the suburbs it would be a "no brainer" for me to let it go. I have a co-worker that drives 40 miles (80 mile round trip) to work driving his f150. I have another co-worker who drive a Ranger V6 about 25 miles each way, he gets about 21mpg. My needs for a pickup truck are much like yours. Don't really need a pickup truck that often but when you do, well..... If I give this Tundra up I will be looking for a replacement pickup, just one that I can pay cash for. As I walked around the new car show this past winter and looking at all the new trucks I kept thinking "I'm glad I've got what I've got. The new Tundra is bigger and heavier and gets less mpg than the 1st gen Tundra. My friends with Dodge Hemi's wish they got my gas mileage. Gee, Im taliking myself into keeping my Tundra again. I recently got lucky and picked up a nice clean 94 Buick Lesabre owned by the proverbial little old lady since new, never driven in winter weather so there is no rust and only has 60,000 miles on it. This car opened up my options on wether to give up my Tundra. With the way the price of gas is going up I figure used pickup trucks will be flooding the market so there should be a lot of "good deals" out there. I think I just talked myself into letting my Tundra go........again. Anyway, thats my 2cents worth.

Well, tomorrow morning (Saturday May 24th.) is going to be a sad day for me as I'm turning my leased 05 AC 4x4 with only 19,500 miles back to Toyota. I could have bought it out for $17,900. that comes out to over $400.00 @ 6%apr per month for 4yrs plus insurance ($65.00 a month) but with the way gas is going I just can't justify that kind of expense for the convienence of utility that the tundra gave me. I really planned on keeping the truck and took care of it as if I were going to have it as long as I had my last Toyota 4X4. (15yrs). I hope to get some kind of pickup that I can pay cash for in the near future but I'm resigned to the fact that I will never own another truck as nice as my Tundra. I think a new era has dawned on the American driver. The days of relatively cheap gas are gone forever. It's been a lot of fun monitoring this forum for the last few years. I'll check back once in awhile and see whats happening. At least I still have my Harley (2003 100th Anniversary Heritage Springer) and it averages 46 to 50mpg on the Hwy. Good luck to you all..........Harleyguy

Rant over now.
I tend to think your post has No direct merit. My next door is a district manager for the big Chain you mentioned above and I know very well the company philosophy has started to recycle more and more into the coming future with Lee scott advice. The very bag's you use in store level's have recycle centers yet the company has worked with there vendor's into packing less waste and material's to ship them saving them a lot on money on tranportation cost. If you want to bone pick just one retail chain you might as well review Target coles ,Cosco and the rest. Thank's for the rant but serves no purpose singling out one retailer when they sell biodegradable product's in store level yet understand the world is ever changing take for example there green global store's in arizona.

have a great weekend

Only drive the Kia to work, it's just a 02 beater that's mechanically perfect with 42k miles on it.
Gave $2600 dollars for it. P.S.,P.B. Cold A.C.,auto trans
It averages 27 mpg to work and back.
The Tundra averages 15.5 same trip.
It will save me $1800 dollars in gas to work over the Tundra this year @ $4.00 a gal + 15k in mileage.
60 mile round trip.
Insurance is less than $400 per yr.
Do I want to make payments on the Tundra to set in the driveway?
Probably will as I am getting more upside down every day due to the severe depreciation on trucks right now.

I just bought a 1990 Honda accord LX from a co worker for a commuter car. Paid $400.00 for the car and so far i have repaired the exhaust and bought a head light, and grill and some bulb sockets because the bumper was ripped off in a minor fender bender. I hate to let my Tundra sit in the drive way and make payments on it, which is something I told myself i would never do, but with gas the way its going it's gonna sit. I will use it to tow my boat for fishing trips. I just filled up the Honda and have not been able to figure the milage out yet but its going to save me money.

I've thought about selling mine but.......nah. This was my 1st brand spanking new vehicle and had intentions of driving it into the ground before I get something else. For 8yrs it's been nearly flawless with the exception of some squeaking. The main reason why i'd sell is for more interior room since I have a 1yr old now. If that Tacoma frame recall creeps on to the Tundra's, I'd consider a DC Tacoma

I use my beater car when I can. It's a 1989 Buick Skyhawk. Costs me about $32 to fill up and it lasts me about 2 weeks. LOL.

MY CREWMAX 5.7 = 16.7 MPG AVG
MY MOTHERS 07 6 CYL 4RUNNER=17-19 AVG
WIFES 2.3 L 4 CYL = 25-27 AVG

ONLY IF YOU HAVE A 4 CYL WILL IT BE WORTH IT AND NOT BY MUCH IN GAS.

I drive 75 miles a day and take wifes car 3 times a week to compensate a little.

When you think about it, paying even $4 to move 6,000 pounds of metal more than 15 miles is pretty reasonable... (I have to give credit to some guy at Road & Track for that one).

I've got a 2002 with about 68000 miles on the ODO. I own it outright now.

I drive about 9,000 miles/year. If I were very lucky, I'd probably be able to sell the truck for $8,000 in MA (probably a trade-in value deal). After all that was over, I'd have to buy a Honda Civic or something like that for $25,000. Then I'd have to buy new racks to carry my kayak, and figure out how to carry big stuff (probably by renting a trailer which the Civic couldn't even pull). Then my back would hurt from getting in and out of the little Honda, so I'd be shelling out for extra massages.

Candidly, selling the Tundra would put me at the top of a slippery slope to financial disaster (although the massages would be nice).

Default Re: Time to sell the Tundra???

I've pretty much decided to keep the Tundra until the wheels fall off...that's the only thing that really makes any financial sense, since the resale value of gas guzzlers has dropped like a rock and will continue to drop as gas prices continue to rise. I've been experimenting with changing my driving habits, however, and I averaged 18.8 mpg at my last fill up. This was based on about 50% town driving and 50% highway driving. I kept the rpm's below 1500 on accelerating, coasted between traffic lights, kept my highway speeds at about 65 mph and avoided lines of traffic on the freeway where there's a lot of braking and accelerating. It's kind of funny, but I noticed that my freeway trips took only 2 or 3 minutes longer than they would have taken had I tried to maintain 70 or 75. Lots of other folks still shoved their gas guzzlers along at 75 and 80. Hugo Chavez and the Arab sheiks must love those guys...

Since I got the SCANGUAGE ( which shows Mileage TODAY as well as as INSTANT MILEAGE ) I make a point at improving my MPG religiously. Instead of the usual 15 or 16 that I used to get with mixed city/rural driving I see 17 to 19 now ! Nothing drastic but comforting nonetheless !

The sad part of the price of Oil being 3 times what it was 6 years ago here in the USA is that in Europe the price of gas has been steady for the last 5 years. Only here does it go up..........
I guess the Dollar isn't worth much on the world market these days

Stopped by today to ask the same question concerning selling. of course i have no intention of doing so, but i am somewhat concerned what all of this is doing to resale values. are they dropping faster than normal? anyhoot, keeping mine, i bought it cause i liked it, no probs so far. wish it was paid for, then i'd sit her in the driveway, and lease myself a mini!

Hell no, I don't care if gas is $10.00 a gallon, I would NEVER get rid of my baby. I would never let gas prices determine what I want to drive. As a matter of fact I'm anxiously waiting for the all new 400 HP Camaro to hit the streets so I can tear up some asphalt.
This thing about our trucks depreciating so quickly is all wrong. I've seen several 04 DC's just like mine but with alot more miles still selling for $20,000 plus. I guarantee I could still get that much plus more for mine. My 04 only has 29,900 miles on it, not a single scratch and drives like it came out of the dealership yesterday. Toyota's still hold their value better than any of the other competition out there.
