1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Time to sell the Tundra???", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
This thing about our trucks depreciating so quickly is all wrong. I've seen several 04 DC's just like mine but with alot more miles still selling for $20,000 plus. I guarantee I could still get that much plus more for mine. My 04 only has 29,900 miles on it, not a single scratch and drives like it came out of the dealership yesterday. Toyota's still hold their value better than any of the other competition out there.
Asking prices and selling prices are quite different. If you know of anyone wanting to overpay, send them my way. I've got relatives out there in NM, I'll even drive it out. $20k was/is my bottom dollar on my '05 with 32k miles. That's $1,000 less than I was offered on trade for in back in December. I had it on craigslist for 3 months @$20k and not a single call or email. I sold both my prior daily-driver trucks on there. Local dealer has a truck identical to mine but with 23k miles and cleaner, they're asking $19,995. Been there for two months. If a dealer can't get $20k, no way I can do it.
See i've actually researched prices which is why I gave up on trying to sell mine. It's not that I don't like it, or even care too much about the gas cost, but I took on a new commute, driving 30 miles each way out a very hilly/curvy two-lane road and the old Tundra isn't exactly the best tool for that job.....
Once the shock value of the gas prices wears off, things will return to normal. Gas is always more expensive in the summer time and Big Oil is just maximizing its profits as it always does. Demand for large trucks and SUVs will decrease especially with the intense media coverage, but I don't think it will stay this way forever.
As far as I'm concerned, it would cost me more money to sell the truck and get a new car and fix it up the way I wanted to. Not only would I lose the money I put down on the truck, but I just got new REVOs on it in March and spent plenty of money on tint and accessories. You'd probably have to do the same thing for any new car you'd get whether it is tires or brakes or an engine overhaul. Either way, I have a great ride that is reliable, safe and looks good. I don't want to get anything else. I walk out to my truck almost every day and say "Whoever owns that truck is a lucky SOB". I'm not getting rid of her anytime soon.
A vehicle is not going to be worth much anyway after the first 4 years. Also you have a 06 model so there is already a lot af depreciation even is gas was not higher. The only way to get the money out of a vehicle you buy new is to drive it for a couple of hundred thousand miles. If you bought it used then it may be worth unloading. Also anything that gets great mpg is going to cost you more because of higher gas prices.
Things could be worse. We could own Excursions. I saw a news story last night about dealer's taking trade-ins on light trucks and SUV's. An Excursion worth 50K two months ago is now worth 30K. The owners are upside down on their loans, something not uncommon in today's home market. They owe more than the Excursion is worth. They say people are losing thousands to save hundreds on gas.
Each of us will have a price point when the gas prices rise enough to make us dump our trucks. In my case, I'll drive my Tundra until the wheels fall off, unless gas prices get really crazy. Our trucks get better mileage than most other trucks. Also a few mpg's difference could mean people will downsize from larger trucks to our 7/8th size truck.
All of us need to stay tuned. The market will sort all this out.
I watched an '07 Hummer H2 no-sale last week at $22,000.......if you think the average SUV/Truck is bad....
I agree though to a point. I think the truck market will calm a bit once the people that have no use for them get out. I don't see the prices rebounding, but I don't believe they'll keep dropping like that have in the last six months. Now the average SUV....I think there's still dark days ahead for them. Far more SUV's are on the road that are for the most part complete status symbols. We traded our Tahoe about three years ago for the Odyssey. Probably the smartest thing I've done. Not giving back my leased Tundra in January was probably the dumbest......
It's time they made a truck that gets better MPG, until then I will attempt to not whine when ever I fill up the Tundra. I thought about going to the Tacoma, but its MPG is not good enough for all the money I will spend to get one. So I will just have to whine in comfort. Hey everybody have a good day.

I saw that segment on CNN too I think if that's what you were referring to. It is true, trading in our Tundras will probably cost us thousands to save hundreds in gas. I'm planning on keeping mine til the wheels fall off... and upgrade to a 4x4 right after!

I plan on kepting mine too . I will always require a Truck and it's payed off so if gas get's higher I'll revest that future Truck payment in gas and Save LOL...

I've considered trading my truck in on a more fuel efficient vehicle however with the lower trade in value now I don't think it's a good idea for me. My truck is paid for so I only have to fuel it and now that I don't have to drive very much it should work out for me.
If you don't believe that trade in values have dropped just go to kbb and check it out. My truck has lost big time value since fuel prices have soared.
