Completely new and this is my first post. 2001 SR5 2WD - completely bone stock except for an awesome "speed dent" on the rear passenger fender and a brush guard.
I'm looking to change my spark plugs since I got my truck about 40,000 miles ago and it now has 86,000 miles on it and I have no idea if it has ever been done. Any tips on what kind of plugs to get, if I should get new wires and anything I should look out for when installing? I have never changed my own plugs or wires so I have no idea what I'm doing but it can't be that hard, right?
Also, I want to clean the inside of my headlights because they are starting to get that weird yellowish film on the inside, but have no idea how to take them off.
I know one of my buddies who has a Firebird and they have a forum like this where he gets a lot of advice and I figured you guys would be the best ones to ask when it comes to this sort of thing. Can anyone help me out?
As for the headlights , the yellowing is more likely on the OUTside of the plastic lens. At least that was the case with mine. I used an old sock and ........toothpaste to buff them back to a nice shine. Not quite as good as new , but Much better nonetheless.
Spark plugs? Well I recently installed some Bosch Platinums with no ill effects , though AFTER installing them I decided to do some research on here and it seems that most here do NOT like them. I will probably go back to stock , which I think is either NGK or Denso. Oh by the way , there are no spark plug wires to replace. Each spark plug has it's own coil conveniently mounted on top of the spark plug cap. Simply unbolt the coil/cap assembly , move them to the side and then replace the spark plug. Couldn't be any easier. :tu
Oh , yeah - Welcome to the site.
NGK is stock. I know on the V8 engines there are no "wires" in the traditional sense. When I first did the plugs on mine I was hesitant at first. I took my time and before I knew it I was done.

Spark plug changes are pretty easy on our trucks, but make sure you use a torque wrench for final tightening. I think torque is something like 15 ft lbs, which is very easy to overtighten and potentially strip the threads out of the head.
As already mentioned, start each by hand and use a little anti-seize.

I like to use a short(2-3") piece of 3/8 fuel line to aid in plug installation. Push the hose over the end of the plug and now you have something to hold onto when threading them in. Pull it off and then torque to specs.

Stock everything, just the way I like it.
i just changed my 2003 v8 last nite w 36000 miles onem; they looked good but cylinders towards the back had more wear; gap is supposed to b at .031 or .032; those densos that came out were about .038- 041!
i used the book recommended copper core AUTOLITES from wallyworld.
the drive in today seemed fine; accelleration is smooth; dont know yet if i shall get the 19 mpg i got before. will check it on a trip this wed.
plug change is very easy esp on passenger side; do it on a cool engine.
i didnnt detach the wire snap, but that may b even easier if done; i did loosen the wires a bit from vatious attachment if i could. need 13mm socket and a good 5/8 sparkpug socket.
Be sure to tape the socket to the extension to prevent "losing" the socket in the spark plug tube. I used several wraps of electrical tape around the socket and extension, just enough to secure the two together. Easy enough to remove when finished.
Di-Electric Grease is always a good idea on spark plugs
