1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Over Heating", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Hey guys.
I was driving today with the AC on for a very short distance and I looked down at the engine temp. and it's almost in the red!! Whats going on? Also I noticed that my fan was spinning just as fast as the RPM all the time even at 50mph in overdrive and I had no power. I had to floor it just to merge. Even when I turned the AC off, the temp was still up there. I have only owned Toyotas and never had had this problem. Could my water pump be bad? The truck only has 70k miles.
Thanks

Look for obvious first, coolant, radiator cap, belts and overflow tank. Did you do a flush? Don't think a bad water pump would cause this, it would cause you to loose coolant and you would see it leaking out below. Could be a thermostat that is stuck closed. I have had them go bad both stuck open and stuck closed. This is where I would look if you are sure to not have lost a belt or coolant. I am amazed that my truck operates within just a few degrees winter/summer AC or not and even on a steep hill. What ever you do, don't over heat it. If it over heats it you can warp the heads!!! You can do an easy check for the thermostat, with the engine cold, open the fill cap, start the truck and watch the gauge, it should climb to operating and then release coolant, the radiator will start to recirculate if it is working
Could be the thermostat, fan clutch, water pump, radiator, or if you recently had a coolant service, there could be an air bubble in the system. I'd look for the obvious first, like leaks etc.... then i'd replace the easiest first. Replace the thermostat, check the fan clutch and see if it has good tension, if not it need more oil. Then the water pump. But if you had your cooling system serviced recently, then i would bleed the system for air bubbles.
It has to be the thermastat because everything else seems to be fine and it never has done this before just happened out of the blue. I'll check it out and report back.

good luck,
buy a new oem themostat with the gasket and flush it out real good.
and try it.
if it still runs hot, better bring it in for service, i could be a million things.
do you have a scan guage2 3.15version. or borrow a friends, maybe it might show a code. ???
i hope you get it worked out

I put the new thermostat in about three days ago and everything is working fine. My temp gauge has not moved above normal and my fan is never on. It seems to be back to normal. After I removed the stock stat I put it in water to if it was working. I notice about 200 degrees before it started to move. Anyway thanks for the help.
