Default Sealing the tailgate on a 2005 DC

I have a A.R.E. camper shell on my 2005 DC with a sealing/leak problem. The shell seals just fine as does the tailgate up to the latches on each side of the tailgate. However, there is about a 6" space on each side of the tailgate from the latches to the bottom of the shell that is not sealed and does not look like it will be easy to seal. There is basically nothing behind this part of the tailgate so a rubber sealing strip will not do the job. It looks like I will need to fabricate something out of a rubber block or perhaps expanding foam to seal this part of the tailgate. Has anyone successfully sealed this area? I have problems with water entering when in rains and in car washes, and dust leaking in while I'm driving around dusty roads fishing and hunting. Help!

There is a product that is sold in most truck mags. in the back that is called something like tailgate seal. It is basically a 16 foot or so rubber gasket material that is suppose to seal the sides and base of the tailgate. I bet it could be modded to just about seal anything. I know performance sold it in the past.

Exactly ! Not sure what it is called, but "tailgate seal" sounds correct. I bought and installed one in my 2006 and it makes a big (positive) difference.

It glues ( 3M adhesive ) onto the truck bed and the tailgates simply compresses it, making a nice tight fit. No more water and dust into my camper shell ( I do, incidentally, use it as a camper ). It is not perfect as there is still an inch of so of space at the top corners of the tailgate where it is still open from a certain angle. So far I never noticed any water coming in, so maybe I will leave that alone. Otherwise I might have to add a small piece of insulation up there to seal it shut.

when i picked up my retrax, i also grabbed the tailgate seal thingy. it worked okay, but the best thing that i did was pick up some of that pipe cover stuff. in the plumbing section of your local hardware shop near the copper pipe. it has adhesive parts and i just trip to fit. makes the tailgate shut a bit tighter, but it keeps the water out. plus if i mess up, there's always more to use!
