Re: Another '02 Tundra transmission bites the dust
So what was the cause of the failure? Did the torrington bearing give out? Sun gear crack? Planet gears come loose? Ring gear crack? Just curious, that's all. Thx

Re: Another '02 Tundra transmission bites the dust
I have an 02 TRd 4X2 tundra and I dont baby it it has more than 105 K miless and it shifts like butter smooth. To the oroginal poster did you drove it hard or regular.
Re: Another '02 Tundra transmission bites the dust
I have a 02 4x4 TRD and I drive it like I stole it. Pull a 6K trailer over the mountain pass. I do a tranny drain and fill every 40K or so. I have never had a problem it drives just like the day I drove it off the lot a 110K ago.

Re: Another '02 Tundra transmission bites the dust
You've got me worried! I'm leaving South Dakota on Saturday for Alaska. Every once in awhile I'll notice a kinda fast or jolting shift in between 3rd and fourth. Most of the time it like someone else said "butter smooth". Do I start worrying??
Re: Another '02 Tundra transmission bites the dust
Just picked up the truck with the rebuilt transmission. Technician said the "needle bearing became 'uncaptured' in the planetary O/D gear" and caused the damage to the parts shown in the pictures. Sorry I am not a mechanic and have never had any transmission issues on any vehicles. As stated earlier the truck hauled a small trailer one time, in 2003.
I'm writing a letter to Toyota and Platinum Care folks now. Has anyone actually written Toyota and received a response? If so, please reply or post with name and address information, TIA.

Forgot to add – all major service work was done by the dealer at the recommended times. So the transmission was serviced on schedule. And we took the truck in at 98k miles to be checked. They gave the truck a clean bill of health.

Only thing I can recommend is dont let the trans "hunt" between gears. Shift up, shift down, shift up, shift down constantly. This creates heat which destroys trannys.
Dont tow with OD on. And dont tow over the max weight. The OD gear is the weak link so be very careful with it.

Re: Another '02 Tundra transmission bites the dust
I have 139,000 on my 01 v8 AC and the tranny still runs strong. I have always towed with OD on, except on backroads where the rpms are low enough. The RPMs are just too high for my liking iin 3rd gear on the highway. I do change the tranny fluid on time as well. So don't worry too much about your trannys.
Re: Another '02 Tundra transmission bites the dust
I have 82K on my 01 and every time I tow I turn the overdrive off. I would much rather get slightly lower mpg for the sack of my trans. I towed lumper all weekend in my bed in addition to a trailer full of lumber and branches so OD stayed off the whole time.
To the OP I am glad that you got everything worked out and I am sorry to hear about your problems. At least now you should have nothing to worry about!...at least not the planetary gears.

Re: Another '02 Tundra transmission bites the dust
The saga continues...
Yesterday, the CEL came on. Took it back to the Aamco shop. They checked the code and it's another O2 sensor. Bank 1, number 1. This will be the third one we have had to replace.

Im glad cobb Toyota replaced all mine 2 year's ago there was a problem with something else but mine was replaced on the O2 since it's a knowen problem on these truck same happened on my old 2000 bank one ..
Re: Another '02 Tundra transmission bites the dust
The O2 sensors average about 70K miles in my Tundra. I'm at 145K and have replaced all 4 now, and sensor #1 bank #1 twice. You might as well budget it in!
Re: Another '02 Tundra transmission bites the dust
The tranny in my 01 was replaced at 78k and now im at 151k so im getting worried. Almost to the point where the first one broke. Im good with fluid changes but the timing belt is still original. It was supposted to be changed last saturday but my work needed me on saturday. I have it scheduled for this saturday along with my headers.
