at 103k miles. Truck started banging noise when shifting last night. Today, dealer determined transmission needs to be replaced.
All maintenance performed at dealer and dealer checked the truck at 98k miles in January prior to the 100k warranty expiration. SE Toyota and Customer Care said "no offer on out of warranty claim". The dealer has always been great. Original owner, two drivers, middle age, no towing, no off-road driving.

Yes, the "banging noise" started Monday night. No previous warnings or symptoms, no lights on dash. The dealer tech easily recreated the problem when driving the truck.
I forgot to note it's a 4 x 2 V8 Tundra Limited. I'll post an update when I have more information.

The problem dropped off considerably in the 2003 model year with an upgraded planetary gear set.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to siphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
If your engine doesn't consume ANY oil it will seize???

Re: Another '02 Tundra transmission bites the dust
After another attempt by our dealer service manager, Toyota said "no". Had the Tundra towed to a highly recommended AAMCO (who has experience with Toyota transmissions) and their "second opinion" confirmed the dealer diagnosis.
If you're following this thread, here are the options, costs and warranties from my research:
1. Dealer - install Toyota rebuilt transmission, 12 mo/unlimited mileage ($3600).
2. AAMCO - rebuild transmission onsite, 12 mo/12k miles (est. $3000), add $600 for 36 mo/36k mile warranty.
3. Independent transmission shop - Jasper rebuild, 36 mo/100k miles ($4200).
4. Independent Toyota repair shop - Toyota rebuild, 12 mo/unlimited mileage ($3800).
I was told Jasper does not have a rebuilt transmission in stock; they can do an "R&R" which will take 3+ weeks to ship our core, rebuild and return.
Considering Option 2 at this point. Stay tuned for an update and pics.

Re: Another '02 Tundra transmission bites the dust
Have you considered buying a low mileage trans from a salvage yard out of a wrecked 03 or 04 Tundra. You should be able to get one shipped to ATL for about $1500.
Re: Another '02 Tundra transmission bites the dust
Thanks for all of your posts and suggestions.
After more research, the Tundra transmission is being rebuilt (with "updated" parts). Attached are images of the disassembled transmission.

Re: Another '02 Tundra transmission bites the dust
Seems like a good lil bit of metal shaving my 2000 tundra access cab SR5 had over 100K orignal owner miles and never had trans problems. I just had the sifter to break twice but that was it and the regualr first gen recalls. So who are going to let rebuild the trans I let the dealer do it if I were you if you trust them.

Re: Another '02 Tundra transmission bites the dust
Sorry to hear about the transmission taking a crap on you. My 2000 tundra access cab 4x4 has over 125k and I never had a problem yet. "Knock On Wood" I've had the transmission flushed only twice. It does however sometimes shift a little on the hard side but not too hard.
