I know you did not have any issues but when you tow in the mountains you really need to cool your radiator. If you have good fan(s) then it ok to keep your original thermostat (180*F).

But in most cases I believe its better to be safe and replace it with either TRD Thermostat (160*F or 71*C - its about $100 from a toyota dealer and I can't find any other place to buy one). I've done a lot of conversions on european cars (mostly bmws), most of the times its recomended to replace thermostat to lower temperature, this way your radiator has time to cool off.

Recently my mechanical fan has failed and thanks to mustang67408, I was able to fix my mechanical fan. Now since I have SC, I am seriously considering to change my mechanical fan to an electric fan.

However with the DCcontrol.com controller the fan only draws 15amps at 3500. The fan is capable of 4300 cfm.
so if i have 385hp in my truck then how much of air-flow i need? 3850cfm minimum? Thanks for all of the help

I did the same on my 1977 Firebird with a 455, put in a Taurus fan, now I get 9 MPG instead of 8

The only reason I don't change the thermostat is that the engine will run cooler. That should make it run rich and burn more fuel...is this correct or am I wrong?

My electric fans work like a factory setup. Absolutely no problems to date. In fact, they've been flawless so far. TOTALLY love them!

TOYOTA designed the engine and cooling system to be able to function in the worse conditions: hot summer day, while towing a trailer going uphill.................

The thermostat is an integral part of the cooling system as it regulates the temperature of the coolant. It should stay as designed.

A 160 F thermostat will only fool the ECM into believing that the coolant has not reached operating temperature yet and will make the car run richer ( read lower MPG ).

If you modify the vehicle then you might need a larger core radiator or additional fans.

I use a 160 thermostat in my race car too but i don't care about the gas mileage ( 6 to 8 MPG on the track).

Well, I have 2003 motor in my tundra with TRD SC. My mechanical fan broke, and its not cooling properly. When I drive with out any load in my truck or not towing, my truck runs fine. But as soon as I put load more then 4000lbs (on a trailer) my truck runs very hot (but water is not boiling). So to tell you if I want to get electrical fans - well I am worried a little, since I tow heavy weight every other day.

Here a picture of mechanical fan appart

Follow DH's link. That was my posting, and yes, I had one. Perma Cool sponsors a lot of racers out in California, but they did nothing to help me out when their product quit, not once, but twice. The last time it failed, it almost took my truck with it. Read my post on that link and make up our own mind. I was able to get a full refund from Performance Products, but it took a while due to non or very slow cooperation from Perma Cool.
