Thumbs up Electric Fans = Better Mileage

So I installed dual electric fans last week and noticed a Huge difference in Mileage and power!!!

I have had my SR5 4x4 2000 tundra for 8 years and never saw decent mileage until this week! We drove from Mass to Penn. for a camping trip and loaded the whole truck with stuff. on the trip there I drove 60 - 65 with a light foot and made the 267 mile trip in 5 hours and only used 12.89 gallons all highway... you do the math 20.7!!! that's 3 more than I've EVER gotten from this truck.
on the way home I drove hard and stayed above 70 with the A/C on and still averaged 18.7!! there is hope

on the backroads I'm getting 17.5 on average driving normal

yeah i've done this on a few vehicles and noticed the same improvements. This is something I want to do to my Tundra in the future as well. Did you use a kit or did you put something together yourself?

what exactly does it do? where / how do you install?

do you have to disable your existing belt driven fan, etc?

Hearts,

This mod will allow you to take the fan off of the engine, and replace it with an electrical one. Doing this takes drag off of the engine and in turn gives you more horsepower and torque to the wheels.

So a basic install will involve removing the water pump pulley (with the OEM fan), unbolting the OEM fan, and then bolting the pulley back up to the water pump without the fan. Then you have room to install the electric fan. Flex-a-lite typically includes generic installation guidelines with their universal fans.

I would like to hear from others with simular MPG improvements. It is hard to believe this could really help that much. I don't doubt you got what you said, just there could be other reasons. Anyone with long term results like this?

<raises hand>

I've done this on a number of trucks. It does help. You take this big huge rotating mass that creates drag on the engine, and replace it with an electric fan that produces almost no increase in drag from the alternator...

Its one of the easiest way to bump HP and any respectable drag racer installs this mod...

if under driving the alternater works in little imports, then totally removing a pully seems to make sense.
The same belt works? Doesnt change the size?

I did this and it's one of my favorite mods. I still get 2-3 mpg difference but nowhere near 20mpg. I stay in the 18mpg range. Also, you do not have to remove your water pump for this mod. In fact, I never even removed my belt during this mod.

Let me know when you do it. I would love to see your pictures. DH did a great job on his write up. Any idea why more people don't do this mod?

I did this with the Perma Cool "Cool-Pak II" for Tundra. You remove your stock fan and fan shroud, install the kit in the same holes the shroud was bolted to, attached the power cable, ground, and AC wire and you are done. That stock fan weights 35 lbs and really drags the engine down. I have since removed mine due to some problems I had with the unit I had. Customer support at Perma Cool was not very good, although I was assured that they were reorganizing to improve that.

I think I lost 7-10 HP and 3-4 MPG when I took it off, but the crap I had to listen to for installing something that almost toasted my truck has prevented me from trying this again. I was in the 18-20 MPG range, but now with a crapped out UNICHIP and the fan removed and different tire sizes, I'm around 13 MPG now.

I watched DH with his project and gave him some info that he may have used, so there are some threads here with all that in them. Do a search for electric fans and you should find them. Hope you find a good solution and good luck.
BJ

BJ

I did use a lot of your info as it was most helpful in my initial design. I chose the fans, control modules and wiring design based on your recommendations. The only thing I've yet to do is, add flaps to allow more air flow through my shroud like the one you had from Perma-Cool.

I was waiting for the summer heat to hit to test my system before adding the flaps. The other day I towed my Jeep for an hour in 90 degree temps through stop and go traffic with no cooling issues.

Once the heat really hits and my set-up gets put through the ringer, I plan on sharing more info. Thus far it's flawless.

BTW, like the new name!
