1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Catalytic converter options?????", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I need help, I have a 2001 tundra v8 with a p0420 code. Is there any other option with aftermarket converters that will work other than dealer cats. As with everyone these days money is tight and I just cant see paying 1200 for a converter, but on the other side of the coin I dont want to waste money on a cheap aftermarket cat. So I guess what I am asking is what converter is recommended. Name brand, model # , and so on. Thanks in advance.
cut it off and keep it off.. haha na i think that they make bypass's for the cat sensor so that you could install an aftermarket cat converter if the toyota sensor doesnt work with the after market one. you could always go to a junk yard.

I sent you a PM. Take the truck to a local muffler shop and get universal ones installed. I told toyota to shove it and never took the truck back again for service.
Looks like $220 each. Try some local Junk Yards in the area. You might be able to find 2 there. I've never tried Maganaflow converters. If its made by Magnaflow you know that you are getting a quality product. Try them out if you want to spend the money or go with universal ones from a local muffler shop.

Well, here's my experience. I had the guys at SOS Performance in Panama City, FL create me a custom exhaust back in 2004 for my 04 DC. They had never done so on a DC so I was a bit of a guinea pig. That was a mistake. I've had a MIL with PO420/430 codes every since that will only clear with a scanner. They tried unsuccessfully many times to work out the problem but I was stuck with it and unfortunately moved far away shortly after that and got tired of them giving me the run-around. Here's what I have: TRD headers, Magnaflow Cats, and Borla cat-back. It sounds awesome and gives me some seat-o'-the-pants gains but the code still bothers me. Mainly because my current state has emissions testing and I can't register my truck here with MIL on, still have it registered in FL.
I called Magnaflow years ago and they couldn't help me much either. I researched the hell out of the issue and found that these codes aren't that critical as long as you know the reason behind them, i.e. the Cats. It does put my ECU in a default mode which is noticeable. It check it every so often to ensure the same codes come up. I've had 50K miles since the mod and no engine problems. I bought some MIL eliminators a couple of years ago but haven't installed them, a bit hesitant I guess.
Now I'm considering going to the local Magnaflow exhaust gurus and seeing if they can come up with a solution for me to finally "ease my pain". I know that I should've gotten more pissed off at the SOS guys, they are considered dieties on this forum, but in all honesty, their products only worked "so-so" for me and their lack of customer service really angered me.
So, there you have it, I'll be very interested to see what you find out.
I'll have to check out the part number, I used to have it at hand but forgot. It is OBDII compliant, I called Maganaflow and gave them all the details and they told me that the cats were the correct ones for my truck and couldn't understand why things weren't working out. I've had it to two separate exhaust shops as well and they were stumped. The consensus is that the Toyota ECU data isn't happy with the higher flow numbers between the O2 sensors and trips the MIL.
Hey there. go to JC Whitney.com and buy two universal hi-flo converters (there is no reason to buy some "name" brand converter)...there about $120 +/- a piece and a good shop can weld them in for you......good luck, CSM-H
