1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "A few questions Questions", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Ok well i'll start by saying ive already used alot of information that ive gotten from this site and its been a great resource for any maintenance and/or modifications ive done to my truck. Thanks to all the knowledgeable people that contribute the information. I just have a few seemingly small questions that i was hoping to find answers to. I have searched for all of these topics and either not found the answer i was looking for or found conflicting info.
First question (for you scanguage owners) and i know it will vary slightly from truck to truck, but at what cruising speed do you find you are getting the best MPG? Any certain speed, RPM, etc... This is more concerning highway driving so 55,60 65?
Second question, ive found conflicting information concerning disconnecting your battery to reset the computer and start the learning process over. Does this work, or is the dealer the only one capable of resetting the computer?
And lastly i plan on replacing spark plugs, cleaning the TB and the MAF within the week, i plan on checking the plugs to see whats in there and replacing them with the same type plugs. The question is should anti sieze compound be used? I've never used the stuff before but it seems some people on here believe it is abslolutely necessary.
Thanks in advance for your replies. And sorry about the title haha...
1. 58 MPH gives best mileage in my truck, but I drive for best time.
2. Disconnect your battery to clear the ECU.
3. I used anti-seize, but was told to reduce the TQ that I tightened to from like 13 ft lb to 7 ft lbs (if I remember correctly)
Hope this helps...
BJ

I found that 58 mph is a "sweet spot" on mine too. When I posted that result a few months ago, I had the impression everyone who read it thought I was nuts.
Disconnect the battery while you do the maintenance . Your computer will reset to the factory default values.
Use some anti-seize. A little bit goes a long way. Be careful not to get any on the plug's electrodes.
I don't think I've heard about reducing torque values when using anti-seize. I just carefully torque the plugs to factory specs.
Remember, the aluminum head is softer than the steel spark plug threads so make sure the plugs are threading in OK. If you get cross-threaded, its the head that will get chewed up not the plug.

I have disconnected the battery before whiel performing maintenance or such.
Upon reading the Owner's Manual it clearly states: DO NOT DISCONNECT THE BATTERY CABLES BEFORE CONTACTING YOUR TOYOYA DEALER
This quote is on Page 92 of the 2006 Owner's manual.
I wonder why that statement is there, as I have disconnected the battery cables many times with no ill effect.

How often do you recommend disconnecting the batttery? Im gettting pretty decent MPG right now so i dont want to lose progress... is it possible that having the computer re learn everything could have a negative affect on MPG? And also does anyone have an online copy of the owners manual for an 05 DC? Ive seen many posts about the 07-08 guides being online but ive had no luck in finding one for my truck...might just be time to order a paper copy?

Maybe because you clear all the error codes when you interrupt power?

Nope, If there is a code before, it will still be there afterward.
( I have checked that before ) Maybe it clears some codes but not all of them.

On my '03, disconnecting the battery cleared my misfire codes, back when I was having problems with my Unichip. I can clear codes with my ScanGuageII but was trying to keep those for the dealer to help with diagnosing the problem. To remove the Unichip I had to disconnect the battery, so I was in a catch22.

ive used the battery disconnect to clear codes on other vehicles before, but the kicker was if the CEL was on for anything other than a maintenance reminder, it would just come back on 50 or 100 miles later.
It still doesn't explain WHY the owner's manual says to Contact the Dealer before disconnecting battery.
