1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "truck is running better than new", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I have 151k on my 01 trd AC limited so i decided that before vacation i was going to go over the truck good for the long drive. I still have the original timing belt on the truck so i knew that was first on the list. While i was in there i did a new water pump, coolant fluch, serp belt, fuel filter and thermostat. I then took off the old y pipe with the resonator removed and magnaflow exhaust and swapped them for new stock peices and then threw a set of JBA headers on. All in all the truck is smooth as silk and beleive it of now it has a noticable amount of more power and torque. I could beleive it but now its quiet and runs much better. I dont know if its the headers or if its that the previous exhaust work actually hurt performance but i couldnt fry the tires from a dead stop but now i can (well one tire fire). I know the timing belt was in bad shape too, it actually had a concave shape from being on there for so long so maybe the timing was slightly off. The work was done after hours at the local toyota dealer, my dad is has been a tech there for over 20 years. Be aware that if a shop tries to charge you crazy money for a header intall we did it in under 2 hrs. The JBAs went right in with no problems. It was a bit easier having the y pipe out because they will slide right back towards the rear of the engine. The passenger side is a peice of cake and the driver is not bad but there is the sheering shaft that makes it a bit tight but its able to be done. Other than that it took us about 8 hours to complete everything including a few of cigarette breaks and a Wendys run. Either way i thought i would share my experience.
Good deal on the maintenance items... 180k, wow, that's almost double-life on the suggested replacement period for the timing belt, but at the same time, glad it lasted as long as it did. My guess is, the JBA is what you got your boost from. Did you also check the throttle body for build-up?

clarification on exhaust. did you remove the stock y pipe and resonator?
i tried running with out the resonator and it was a bit to loud on long trips that i had it put back on. the design on the factory y site makes me wonder if it was actually designed that way on purpose or just out of cost cutting. they squeeze two pipes into one pipe of the same diameter. seems that would create more back pressure. i had mine removed and had a y built so the two pipes join without the squeeze. Now if that did any good i am not sure. i need to replace the exhaust manifolds and when i do i will have the pipes replaced up to the resonator. i did not really see any preformance increase nor milage increase. i did notice i can not break the tires loose on concrete. :'(
ask your dad if this makes since or should i just go back to stock configuration.

Just remember.....every mile you put on that truck , your over all cost per mile goes down, thus negating the higher gas prices! think about it! It will make you love your truck even more!
davis3903- i returned them to stock original unmodified peices. He is a firm believer in stock Toyota parts. The header though he does like because he was a hotrodder back in the day and he saw how the stock design is so poor.
I just got home from vacation. Loaded down with about 5-600lbs the entire trip im up to 360 miles with no fuel light. This is also with with those heavy BFG AT 285s on. This was no ride across the great plains either, it was at a place called Raystown lake in the hills of central PA. I should have done this earlier but my dad tore up his shoulder and couldnt do the work till now.

Well both, he is a tech there and it was done after hours while it was getting state inspections done. They let the techs work on family members trucks after hours.
Im now up to 318 miles and have just under a 1/4 tank. This is also the uncorrected number of miles. It is what is shown on the odometer, i know its a little more because of the bigger tires.
They wont last long, i got a 3rd member with 4.10 gears and a TRD lsd ready to go in so that will hurt it a little bit. Im probably going to get a trd supercharger as soon as one comes along. I decided to spend a little money on it and so far it has made the truck a lot better to drive. I may just hold onto it for a while and get rid of the 4runner instead. A new tundra is in my future either way. The rebates here in PA suck compared to other parts of the country so when they get better ill have one. I see now they have 0% for 5 years now so i may start looking. Unfortunatly the new Tundra will be for the wife, the 4runner is too small to haul the kids and their toys around.
