1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "LSD oil ?", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
on my 06 DC when i get to 60K service i will change cycle to 60K between changes due to running synthetic plus warranty is over at 60K so i can do what "I" want. Been running Mobil 1 Syn in my 93 drive train for 140K and i check it frequently and it is as clean as the day i put it in!
There are two steel plugs on the rear end housing. Remove the lower one to drain the oil. After reinstalling the lower one, remove the upper one to refill with new oil.

Before you take the bottom drain plug out, make sure the top fill plug is at least broken loose. Think it through, if you drain it, but can't get the fill plug loose, your stuck. Just food for thought.
Oh, the bottom plug also has a magnet in it, be sure to check and clean all the crud off. There is also a DIY Thread in the Sticky at the top of the forum.

You can get it in squeeze bottles at the Toyota dealer. If you have limited slip, be sure to get the oil meant for limited slip or else your rear gears will make growling noises.
Just as soon as I change my Front Diff oil, I'll have Royal Purple 75W-90 in everything; Transfer Case & Rear Diff have already been changed. And, since I'll have the skid plate off, I'll change my filter to a TRD filter I picked up and put in 6.5-7 qts of Royal Purple 5W-30 and a few shots of grease in the front driveshaft zirks, then I'll be done for a while. NOT, still have some mud cleaning to finish.

yea i guess they put enough in it when the make it? RP gear oil comes with Hypoid modifiers in it but Mobil 1 said it also does but obviously not enough! nothing a small tube of modifiers can't cure!
i went to get the oil this morning at advance auto parts and i was told that lucas 80w90 is the best oil i could get, i decided to ask here first before i buy it, what u guys think?
if you use royal purple there is no need for the friction modifiers.
Exactly!
I bought my truck at 31.5K and didn't know what the original owner did or did not do. I finally figured out that I needed to change the rear diff, it had about 52K.
When I did drain the rear, it had the distintive smell of burnt oil, and I got that smell all over everything in the garage, my clothes, everything. It took weeks to get rid of that smell.
And as it turns out, I bought the heavier weight 75W-140 RP gear oil, and it was still pretty cold out. Every morning, when I backed out, it felt like I had a brake dragging or something. It was the heavier gear oil.
So, about 1000 miles later, I drain and refill again with 75W-90, so it got flushed, I guess you could say. No problems since.
