1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "1st question from a new guy", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
First post from total newbie, certain this is a true well beaten dead horse.......Can you do anything to improve gas mileage on 05 Tundra, double cab, 4.7? I've looked high and low for a chip setter. I've done all the typical fuel mileage stuff, tire pressure, K&N, bed cover, easy pedal, etc., getting 15 city 19 highway. Was hoping to get at least 20-21....... not happenin' I take it???
I love the truck, my first Toyota, owned lots of Honda cars but always driving Dodge diesels........ bought an 05 double cab, 4.7, TRD package, 28K miles, totally beautiful/super clean truck. I do love this ride........ I'm ok with this mileage if that's all I can get, I'll keep it but think like everyone else, gas is not stopping this meteoric climb.
Joined this forum to learn from the experts...... help for the new guy will be greatly appreciated.
I think you are lucky to get 15 city and 19 highway in a truck with a 4.7L V-8 under the hood...Seems as if you've done all the stuff most people would recommend to increase mpg...I usually average about 13 in the city and 17 on the highway with my 5.7.

You are doing good compared to some of the numbers I've seen probably about as good as it gets in a dc try taking off the bed cover the added weight will decrease mpg more than helping with mpg it was on myth busters a good while back.Leave tailgate up and drive it make like a vortex or something when the bed fills with air.
The only way I could improve my mileage on my 2006 is to buy a Scanguage and use it to check the INSTANT MILEAGE and TODAY's MILEAGE feature on that tool.
By carefully monitoring the MPG and using the accelerator judiciously, I gained about 2 MPG in town and on the Highway.
Nothing earth chattering but significant nonetheless.
All the classic tips always apply: Keep air filter clean, plugs gapped right, MAF sensor cleaned, tires at the correct pressure, oil changed ...etc

subject been beat up pretty hard, it's a BFT slow down if ya wanta improve! you will spend all your hard earned money on gadgets that do nothing to improve mileage with any beneifts!
it will never get what you want it to, buy a scion like i did 30 MPG with Camry 4 Cyl runs great!
I gained 2 mpg's when I went back to a stock air cleaner.

I have k&n intake, jba headers, and true dual super 44 flowmasters and i get 15.3 in the city and i have 3 inches of lift with 285/75/16 BFG all terrians with 16 inch DC-1. So i bet i get 19 for so on the highway. I truely believe that performance does improve it because before i had all the performance products i had the lift and tires and i was getting 13 mpg and now i get 15.3 with the performance stuff. Now when you get anything performance wise you have to restart your computer. so disconnect your battery for 30 to 45 minutes and then reconnect it. Now you arent going to see the change right away. you will see it over time, i took me around 3 or 4 tanks to get 15.3 mpg. Now it looks good, has 300+ hp, and gets desent gas mileage.
Drive less or get a small car that simple. We all are in the same boat, i love everything about the v8 but the gas mileage. I drive my moms 4 cil.car everychance i get.
Thanks guys, I appreciate all the responses...... yes, I know I can drive something else and get better mileage. My point was NOT to get smaller, less truck/car for mileage, but rather can I continue to enjoy the upper class of really nice trucks and IMPROVE my already acceptable (for what I get) mileage? Just in case someone out there had cracked the code on getting it better.
My cover is NOT one of the hard/heavy types but a Lund roll up and it works really nice for cover but comes off really quickly for that unexpected stop for something that won't fit under the hard top.
I'm also going to be looking around the site to see how I can research my VIN and get factory specs, equipment.
