1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Fuel Gauge Indicator", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
when my light comes on and i get gas, i get 22 gallons to full. so worst case scenario, if you average 10mpg, you can go 40 miles before your truck stalls out.

the reason for the gas light to come on early is this: the gas pump is cooled by the gas, so if you decide to always run below the light, for 20+ miles, you could be in for a expensive fuel pump cost.
usually there is about 4 to 5 gallons left in your tank. which isn't much considering it is spread out, which might be a 1" or 2" in total height.
so when that light com's on, BUY gas. asap.
i'd hate to see you with a bill for a new installed fuel pump.

I usually go another 20-30 (sometimes 35) miles after mine starts flashing. My fuel needle drops below E. I've got a friend with an '06 DC and he says he easily makes it 40 after the light comes on. and he also claims that he gets 16 mpg in that, and 18-19 hwy in his '98 tahoe. I tend to question him on some things.
When the light first goes on you have 5 gallons left. Whatever you are getting for mpg X 5 is how far you can go. I get gas when the light goes on out of habit. Carburatored motors would suck stuff up off the bottom of the tank and clog needles and all kinds of problems. Keep some gas in the tank I say.
