1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Stalls when placed in Drive", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I have a 2002 Tundra V-8 2WD. Was running fine until last night when I pulled into the drive it stalled. Now I can start it fine but when you put it into Drive (Automatic) in stalls immediately. I can rev it up and put it into drive and it goes until you back off on the gas then it stalls. I got a code tester from O'Reilly's and it showed no codes. Any suggestions?? Thanks. Leon

You could start by cleaning the MAF, and Throttle Body.

Is it idling fine in neutral? If so, it may not be engine related. Your torque converter may be stuck in lock-up, or something in the tranny is telling it to lock up when it's not supposed to.
If there's no code, and the cleanings that BJ suggested don't help, sounds like a trip to the local mechanic is in order for a detailed diagnosis.
Will clean the MAF in AM. Haven't worked on the newer Toyota's Last one was a 79 that had 300,00 on it and I gave it away. Can I use anything in particular to clean it with? Would a fuel filter do this? It has 68,000 on it. Thanks again!
I have an appointment on Wed. but will have to tow it 35 miles to the dealer. Bought it used but have been taking it to Toyota. If it is something simple would be nice. Leon

MAF sensor cleaning explained by a 23year Toyota Master Tech.

If it was your old '79, I'd say maybe, but with all of the electronics on newer cars, it could be something completely obscure telling the computer to do something strange...or it could be a mechanical issue. The old "fuel, fire, or air" approach to diagnosing doesn't work quite as well as it did back in the day.
For the record, make sure you get a cleaner specifically for MAF sensors...anything else and you'll be adding a new sensor to the repair bill too.
Too bad about the fuel, fire and air. Life was simple then. Will CRC QD Electronic Cleaner work? I use it on my Ham Radio stuff. Thanks for all the input from everyone.. Leon
newer trucks have a fail safe global warming mode they go into when electronics act up hold your pocket book and take the hit, DIY on these issues will not get ya too far, but a Tech with the proper SST and knowledge can hook you up!

Amen to that! You've gotta have a degree in Elec. Eng., and a boatload of equipment to properly troubleshoot vehicles now. I remember a show on TNN (waaaaaayyy before they became Spike) called Shadetree Mechanic. Informative show, but it slowly progressed to just an oil change and general tune up show. The "shade tree mechanics" are a dying breed. I had my Tundra for trouble free daily driving, and my '72 Monte Carlo for playing...but I'm going way off topic here.
At this point, just suck it up and take it in...anything else and you're spending money needlessly.

Yes, that will work. Any spray cleaner that doesn't leave a residue behind is good. But, I'm thinking that if it idles in Park and/or Neutral, then that might not be your problem and you'll have to look elsewhere. Sorry.

Sounds like the same problem I had. Clean the MAF and throttle body and you should be ok. I changed my fuel filter prior to the cleaning and it did not help. After doing the easy clean everything has worked fine. My truck would not shut off when I shifted to drive, but would shut off when I was driving taking a turn at low speeds.
