I have a 2002 Black V6 automatic 2 wheel drive, extended cab!!! I've had it almost a year and have NEVER seen another V6 on the road.
I've seen maybe 150 (maybe a few more) Tundra's in the past year and not one V6.
Someone please tell me if my truck is really that rare. Someone told me that they made less than 2000 of them. Is this true??
I've got one. I don't think they're that rare, although when I got mine it took them about a week to find it and then a day or two to have it delivered from Northern California. I see a few V6r's out here every once in a while.
I do wonder what the production ratio is between the V8 and the V6 though.

They're not common, but easy to locate on the net if yer looking to buy one. Most are being sold from Arizona to Florida in the south. Only took seven month's to get my special order from the factory.
In magazine reveiws, I have seen it quoted that approx. 10% of production is devoted to v-6s. How accurate this is, I don't know. I would have to say, I have observed about that proprotion or maybe higher.
When I bought mine, it was the only v-6 on the lot out of probably 20 Tundras. Most other dealers in this area had about the same inventory. I do see quite a few regular cab v-6s, but access cabs are fairly rare.
I think Southeast Toyota, along with the dealers, are partial to the $1000 or so higher sticker price of the v-8s.
Although I have only 5300 mi on mine, overall, I couldn't be happier.
I was not happy to hear at the meet at Toms Farm in California early in the year from a member who had purchased a 2003 SR-5 Extra Cab V8 for $20,000.00, now, when I purchased my 2002 SR-5 Extra Cab V6 at the end of the 2001 year, I paid $22,700.00.
Getting back to the issue of availability of the V6 Extra Cab Tundras, they were not that many at the end of the 2001 for the model year 2002.
When I bought mine, there were only two V-6 automatics available in the new england area. a tan one in Connecticut and a black one (pictured below) in Springfield Mass. (80 miles away). I preferred the black anyway. No bargains or dealing either...I see a few V-6's around, but the bulk made were V-8's. added an I.S. grille, an A.R.E. bed cover, and it's a different truck anyway.

Purchased my 2002 SR5 V6 2WD Access cab with 21,000 miles. Great truck. Mileage is disappointing. 15 MPG @ 70 mph hiway.
Is this normal? What mpg do the V8 2WD get?

It depends on what package you get. Check my photos.

Rare is right. Does anyone have a 2002 Thunder Grey SR5 V6 2WD 5-speed. Lt. Grey interior, front bucket seats, manual locks and windows. Had to order it. I figured for as dependable as the engine is; better to have fewer peripherals to fail me over the long haul. Could be one a very few.
Also liked not having the V8 in the grille and no sliding window. The truck turned 12 months old last month with 11,500 miles. Have gotten 18.5 miles/gal averaged. TRD air filter went in last night. Spintech muffler is going in on Monday. Always something to do…
Didn't see one myself ever until visiting the Toyota dealer.
Heard they existed, but never came across one on the road. Now I see them everywhere, usually at least one every day.
Yesterday I saw a local dealer had about 8 brand new V6 standard-cab 2WD Tundras on the lot, and about 12 of the various V8 models.
I really like the 5-speed option and I think that I get better mileage 19.2 average with a high of 22.1 plus the manual trans allows us to moderate speed without using breaks excessively.
I had an '85 Toyota pickup that I put 100k miles on a set of breaks and 198K miles on the original clutch.
I hope that I can do something like this again.
Kind of sick, ain't it?

When I bought my first Tundra, a 2001 SR5 V-8, I really wanted a V-6 5 speed, but they were hard to find, and with the rebates on the V-8 and not the V-6, I could buy the V-8 for only $800 more than the V-6. I kept my eyes open for a V-6, and a year later, I was able to find a V-6 5 speed through Carsdirect for $19,600 equipped exactly like my 2001 that now had 20,000 miles on it. I sold the V-8 for $21000 and bought the V-6. It was almost an even exchange when the taxes were added in. I have never regretted the switch. I liked the V-8, but I love the V-6. It is just a lot more nimble. My insurance is lower, and I have averaged 19.84 mpg for the first 17,500 miles. I can go 500 miles on a tank of gas.
Gatorem, I've averaged just over 20 mpg and I have over 35000 miles on a 2001. Mine IS a stick and I drive very gently.
jmlarence, mine is identical except it is a 2001. I ordered it and paid $200 under factory invoice.
RSLAND, not too many of us have done the 500 mile trick, my best was 519 and I still had a couple of gallons left.
