I am sorry to start another Bilstien thread but my questions are simple. i have a friend who has an 02 AC Limited and needs new shocks. hw asked my opinion and of course i recomended the 5100 since that seems to be what everyone around here uses. the questions are,
will these work ok on the standard setting(no lift)? i ask because i understand that these are a little longer to accomodate the 1.5 lift. he does not want to lift the truck
2) will they provide as good or better than the stock ride? he is not interested in an off road type ride.
thanks in advance,
Mike

yes to aneswer your question I've had mine a wile and really like them of coarse mine have the lift notch but you can stick with normal ride height too.
They don't provide an off road type ride in fact improved the handling vs Oem stock (depending of shocks provided)
Erik
these are the rear 5100

The Bilstein HD shocks are much cheaper, don't lift the truck, and provide a firm, smooth ride. They are the yellow and blue shocks.

lifting on the 2nd notch from top really didn't provide a firm ride ask your wife she thought mine was pretty good. I can say this My tundra isn't firm at all just don't buy AAL on the rear I learned that the hard way.
When it comes to prices there about the same between the Hd and the 5100 on rear. This site has the best overall prices when it come down to paying direct pricing and you can choose between both styles.Hope this help's
top notch and a 1.5" AAL = very smooth ride... love it, better than stock

Nothing too fancy, just better than stock!
We all know the top notch on the Bilstein's creat CV boot problems. Will the 2nd ring from bottom (1.3" avgerage lift) create any issues? Will that lift be able to clear larer tires, perhaps 285/70/17? Has anyone tried the different settings other than max?

we also know that there is a simple solution to remedy it. Anything over say 2" is gonna strain yer CVs

That's were I have mine set and have NO CV leakage what so ever.

I'm not looking to throw the front end geometry out of whack with a 2 1/2 lift. I was hoping to get away with a mild lift of 1 1/4 to 1 1/2. Yeah, I know that's not much, but my truck is an everyday driver. I already have a set of Dick Cepeks, but I'm lost as far as what size tire. I guess I could just run a 275/60/17.
I have been reading up on lift kits and Bilstein 5100's all night. I have absorbed a lot of useful information however have a few questions in regards to lifting the front end.
I have a 2005 double cab with 56k on the odometer. At what point is it reccommended to replace shocks in these trucks? Currently my rear shocks are squeeking every time I hit even a minor bump. I am assuming that shocks are a component that is looked at in the manner of if one of them starts making noise and begins to fail, its a sign that they are all on their way out the door? If one of my rear shocks is now making noise, is that a hint that its time to replace all of them?
I have wanted to level my truck for a while now, and after reading everything tonight I think I am going to go ahead and do it. If I get the 5100 adjustables for up front, is it recommended that I also upgrade the coils/springs? Can one replace just the shocks with the 5100's and keep their stock coils, or is that considered bad practice?
Also, if I do install the 5100's I am doing it to level the truck off, so will I need to add anything to the rear in order to have it look level to the eye?
Any input from you guys would be greatly appreciated...
The rears had a TSB witch I have saved on my home computer. It has something to do with the upper mounting bushings making noise. When your shocks are leaking that is a good sign there bad. I myself changed out my shocks since they where the originals. My 2004 Tundra has 156k all highway. The 5100's have made my truck ride so much better. I have my fronts on the 3rd setting witch still gives me a little bit of a rake witch I wanted for towing. Oh yeah also. They look cool!! LOL

personally, i wouldn't change the shocks until they start leaking. just a little squeak is harmless, but if you want to, it's pretty simple to change them out.
he 5100's are designed so you can use your fact coils. i used my fact coils on my 5100's set at the top notch. i don't think it's bad practice at all.
if all you want is to level out your truck, get the 5100's and set it at the 4th notch. this will make your truck level. if you put it at the top notch, 5th, your front end will be higher and will require an AAL or blocks to level it. or if you like the prerunner look, it'll be ok.

I understand that if one is going to lift the front end up, it is recommended that the front differential is also dropped to reduce to angle resulting from the lift. If I go ahead with the 5100 shocks and lift the front of the truck up, how far down do I have to drop the differential?
I have seen many threads in relation to lifting the truck and dropping the front differential, however none of them state how far its recommended to drop it. I see the kit online, however are there other kits that allow you to drop it more?
I just dont want to install the shocks and end up getting a kit to drop the differential that is too small or have enough drop thus resulting in a large angle still.
Anyone out there who have done this set up have any feedback?
