1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Toyota Fuel Induction System Cleanup $99", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
So I got this coupon in from Toyota in early August and I was wondering if this is worth the money. It says that they clean fuel injectors, manifold, ports, intake valves, and combustion chamber. Is this something that I can do myself instead? I've cleaned the throttle body, K&N Intake system, and ran gumout fuel injector cleaner by myself a long time ago.
I think that is what is called a moto-vac or something like that. My dad is a toyota tech and each year at inspection he run my truck on this and he says it helps. I have over 600k miles logged on my toyota's with no major problems so i cant argue. What he does is loops the fuel back into the tank and actually runs the vehicle on a solution in a tank. Before he connects it to the truck he puts about a gallon from the fuel tank into the machine. He lets it idle for nearly an hour on the machine and it cleans it as it runs. My truck has a perfect idle and great power so ill say it works.
The chemical used is BG44K I think. It does clean the injectors ( if they need it ) and probably cleans out some of the carbon deposits on the valve stems.
You get the same result if you use good gas and pour a can of CHEVRON TECHRON in your tank about once a year. You can also buy a can of BG44K from any repair shop for about $20 and pour it in your tank.
I have a friend who paid the dealer about $100 to get that service done on his 2003 Tundra. It cleaned up the injectors all right, it also messed up both of his 02 sensors. As one of them refused to be removed he ended up having to buy a new exhaust manifold. Not such a great idea after all as the dealer claimed that their work did not cause the 02 sensors to fail.
My take is that if the truck runs good, don't mess with it.

Reason: spelling
If you're into DIY's, you can try the link below. Worked well for me for both my Tundra and Acura (esp. the Acura). While you're at it, change filter, plugs (after you seafoamed), and clean the MAF sensor (on top of air filter housing) and throttle body. Like boosted said, the injectors shouldn't be a prob. if you've used gas from reputable stations and Techron or seafoam seem to be popular injector cleaners.
well I wont be doing the toyota $99 special. The truck runs fine I think for 130K. I'll just do my regular upkeep on the truck. I use Sheetz, Sunoco, BP, Valero, fuel 87 octane.

they dont run just the bg44k. Its a 2 part kit. 3 part here at nissan. They have a tool that slips between the intake tube and TB. Hook up air to the tool and let it flow. Smokes up the shop a tit bit but cleans. Afterwards then the bg44k is tossed into the tank.
2 totally different chemicals used in the process. 1 for the initial cleaning of carbon and the 2nd for the tank, lines, injectors.
