1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "7mgte swap", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
what do you guys think?
as i researched i realize that my 2uzfe is gonna cost more than i expected. To pump out 400hp with decent MPG about $9000 Canadian and that still don't include a transmission that can take the power so about $13000 when transmission rebuild, so i had an older pickup b4 and rite as i made u my mind bout a supra swap it got stolen so here i am back on forums to brain storm, my biggest question is i know i can swap the 7M with a 5 speed transmission but how do i get that electronic transfer case to work?
7m is in the older supras right? why not just go with the 2jz? i'm sure there are a lot more aftermarket parts for it if you want more power.
no ill say about the same amount of aftermarket available plus cost of the initial engine i can get a fully rebuilt 7mgte with better pistons for less than $4500 Canadian with transmission new turbo and all the goodies it ill cost about 3-4500 for a 2jz
I did this swap in my old 88 toyota pickup and its a nice engine. I ran it for 2 years before i spunm the rear main bearing but that is common with them. It was a fun 350hp truck and still got 20mpg. If i remember corrrectly use the 22re trans and transfer with the 4cylinder turbo bellhousing and it will all bolt together. I dont think it will have the low end grunt you are looking for but the the top end is great.
if you're worried about fuel economy then just stock the truck and turbo a honda or suby 4cyl car. You're going to a lot of trouble.
7m is prone to head gasket failure also (i have a supra, and fixed it with head work and ARP bolts.).

my ave combined economy is right at 30mpg using the truck only Sat/Sun, so i feel greener than uncle sam (27cafe?).

7M is a very stout motor. It is not prone to rear bearing failure. Lack of keeping oil is the owners fault. As far as the head gasket goes. Before you blow it replace it with a brand new toyota gasket and some arp head bolts. Low end grunt is there. When I was stock with just intake and exhaust on my 7m I was leaving the line even with T/A's, Z28's, and leaving GT's in the dust.
As far as my supra goes it pumps out 635+hp without any problems so my 7M is pretty stout please dont underestimate these motors.. As far as the R154 1st gear thrust washer likes to go if you dont have a multi disc clutch setup. Ton's of aftermarket support out there for the 7M. You can over build them fairly cheap nowadays. I wouldnt swap a 2j in the truck because the weight issue was pointed out. The 7M has a longer stroke so the torque output is noticeable.
But to mate the r154 up the the transfer case ask alot of the taco guys they've been doing it for years. If I popped the hood on my 7M i'm sure most of you guys wouldnt even recognize that its even a 7M.

sorry to dissapoint but the 7M isn't in my truck. Sorry if it came off like it was.
But my 7M is in my Supra.
As far as my truck goes i've posted pictures in the sticky's up top. Just click on my name on goto user statistics look for posts. I would post a few now but i'm at the office.
I can make a list of modifications the supra has. Right now its currently down. I have sent out for larger injectors and got rid of my maft pro system in place of a standalone system I'm shopping around for now. I have tried to keep it as stock looking as possible. Next time I get back to the house Ill post a pic of the engine bay.
here are a few older pictures thats on my work computer before i put on my custom intake manifold and right as I mounted a larger FMIC.
Eagle rods
ARP head studs
ARP rod bolts
Wiseco .040 pistons
Engine Balanced
Greddy 2.0mm Multi layer steel head gasket
Custom Built intake manifold
Custom built exhaust manifold

Aeromotive A1000 Fuel pump
Aeromotive Fuel pump controller
Aeromotive Fuel pressure regulator

Tial V44 wastegate
Tial 50mm blow off valve
HKS SSQV blow off valve
90mm (3.5") Throttle body
All the fuel lines stainless
Greddy gauges
Titan Motorsports wideband setup

Standalone: shopping around for$$
The list goes on thats just the stuff off the top of my head and theres a good bit of custom engine stuff.
didnt feel the need to get into suspension components and what not. doesn't look like theres that much on the car and I love keeping it that way!

wow wow wow head gasket problems?? that's not new, every vehicle that you boost gonna have that problem that's why i mention a full rebuild that includes a top and bottom deck machined and with a 7M inline that's gonna rev fast you gotta have a copperhead gasket, oh and the 7M got lots of power for a DD once you tune it right and still cheaper than modding the 2uzfe ........but my biggest problem still haunts me how do i get the 4x4 to work if i swap in the 5 speed with engine.......................oh well my next step would be to ...........please see my other post "2uzfe rebuild"
thanks for the props guys. The 2jzgte or the 1jzgte has no head gasket problems due to they come factory with multi layer steel head gaskets. If you are talking about a copper head gasket for the 7M they do not make them. You would have to ring the bores and yada yada which will easily get you in the 10k range so no one has shelled out the cash on that. The 7M doesnt rev as fast as you think but its not slow either.
But as far as power yes. With just intake and exhaust @ 10-12psi as you bounce off fuel cut off. try a manual boost controller set @ 10psi. that would put you in the 250-280hp range and of course your torque will be a tit bit higher.
Just use a multi layer steel head gasket from either HKS, Titanmotorsports, or Greddy of course with some ARP head bolts or studs.
You can turbo the mk2. Make sure its up to par then use all the top end 7m parts such as the intercooler setup and routing along with the exhaust manifold and a few other things and you should be boosted in no time..
