Default Changing water pump

Greetings All,

I have one simple question about changing the water pump in 1st generation Tundras, I myself have an 04'. Do you have to remove the engine to change it? The dealership told my wife that the engine had to be remove from the chassis to perform this 5-6 hour task. The entire engine to change the water pump - just does seem logical. Truck has 170k on it and we've already changed the timing belt once right over the 100k (we should have change the pump then). Now the check engine light is on and I have a faint smell of coolant!!

Please consult me.

Thanks

Ryan

No You don't need to remove the engine. That's BS. A guy on here just did it himself the other day, check out his post: Gonna Change The T~Belt.....Today

He did the timing belt but along with that he changed the water pump. He has plenty of pictures there too detailing the process.

Take it to autozone or similar and they will read the engine code (Check engine light) for you and it's free!

The mechanic or shop manager that said that needs a swift kick in the balls for even suggesting it. If you just had the faint smell of coolant right after the swap, that might not be so bad if they were sloppy about it, but with the CEL lit up, it sounds like they screwed something up in the process. Like Skav2407 said above, any decent parts place like AutoZone can put a reader on it to see what problem code you have.

This is a situation that happens probably thousands of times a day between service managers at dealerships and , I hate to say, women and guys who portray that they know very little about vehicles. I'd love for her to go back by herself and ask again with an ipod in her pocket and record the Bum. Then report him to 7 on your side and Toyota.
I was told last fall that the timing belt on my Miata would cost between $1200 and $3000 to replace because the Mazda Service Manager couldn't tell how much damage was done to the valves . When I looked him in the eye and told him that Miata's, the cars his company services hundreds of times a week, have passive engines and it shouldn't cost anywhere near that, he choked a bit and said that the broken belt might have damaged other engines parts. I again reminded him what a passive engine was. Then I told him the belt just breaks, the tensioners are released and spring back and then with no tension, the belt just just pops off the cam gears and crank gear, into the case and the engine shuts down quickly while the gears simply rub againt the broken belt in 3 places, like no big deal. The belt doesn't exactly explode, ripping steel parts to metalic dust. Maybe, at most I would need a tensioner kit for $60 , I told him, because the tensioners were worn but certainly not beat up by a broken belt. I could have been spoken Latin to the jerk based on what he heard or wanted to hear. I did my homework and knew my stuff from my Miata forum like this one, and also I just before bought a T. belt kit at the parts dept but wanted to see how much I was saving by doing it all myself. He was the laughing (smirking) stock of the other customers, the cashier and staff in the room. the cute cashier with the nice clevage smiled ear to ear. The parts guys gave me a thumbs up as I walked out the door, they couldn't stand this guy, the parts guys were straight shooters and worked with you and actually found you ways to save money, like xeroxing coupons etc, opposite from this Bum. . I can't imagine how many billions of dollars are stolen by service managers per year in the US by unsuspecting customers. I'd record him or at least go along as a hubby who doesn't know a thing about cars, ask neive questions, get him to give his patent "pull the engine" response, nail him on it and contact Toyota Corporate, service relations . His boss probably has him trained this way unfortunately and the Service manager might get paid or a bonus on the departments weekly take.
Good luck.

I still can't figure out why a dealer will buy acres of prime real estate, put up a million dollar building, put another million or two into inventory, and then hire a total ******* to service the very product he sells. WHY DO THEY ALLOW THIS!!

As everyone else said, you don't have to remove the engine when you replace the water pump... If you do have to get the water pump replaced, you should think about changing the timing belt, idler pulleys, tensioner, etc. since you're almost at the point that you're going to need to do it again anyway. No sense paying for the labor to have someone else tear your engine apart twice. If you're going to do it yourself, you probably won't want to spend the time to tear it apart twice.

Yahshuatwo

While your doing your duty, I would go in and change both the water pump and timing belt as the pumps under the timing belt, and it only takes another hours worth of work, here is a link for the parts kit for your truck;Timing Belt Kit Toyota Tundra 00 01 02 03 04 05 06 4.7

Hope this helps.
Kevin.
