1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "OEM battery life?", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Hello,
I bought a barely used 2001 AC 4X4 about a year and a half ago that had a little over 15,000 miles on it. The truck sat alot, but was run enough to keep everything going. It still has the OEM battery in it and it's still going strong. My questions are................
I have an 01 and it still has the OEM battery but, it was the "larger" one that came with the cold weather package. I think I will be ditching it soon once winter comes around. Last winter my truck cranked much slower than it used to and I'm pretty sure that's because the battery has seen better days. But the spring and summer months have been fine so far.
My brother even left the lights on once all night and totally drianed it about 2 years ago. He got a jump and it has still be fine ever since. But 7 years from an OEM battery isn't too bad in my book!
If it still holds a good charge it shoudl be OK. Just set it aside for a couple of days, maybe a week or two and see what kind of drop in voltage you are getting. That could be a good sign on whether or not it is going bad.

many of the factory batteries had problems with leaking. if you keep them clean and filled with water, they can last a long time. Mine lasted over 4 years and then I left the lights one one day by opening the passenger door and turning the key on. It was dead, and I was going out of town the next day so I got a new one from Wal-Mart. I generally don't buy too much stuff from Wal-Mart, but their batteries are actually rated very well, and there is a Wal-Mart pretty much everywhere you go, and they are always open in case something goes wrong. So, thats my justification for a Wal-Mart battery.
Keep my 2000 battery in the Tundra for 3 years, hated the acid dust so I moved it into my 87 Toyota 4x4 and it is still working and creating acid dust like a champ! What is funny is I put in a Exide orbital battery that died in two years then replaced it with a Red Top Optima which is still working. I just hated the acid dust my stock battery always put out no much how much I cleaned the thing. I think the reason the Exide battery died was because I drained it bone dry over a few days with the door ajar.
8 years is a long time for a battery that has not been used much? I would go buy a DIE HARD and call it good!! Much cheaper than the other popular choices and the ones i have are holding up just the same way the DIE HARDS always have!
I just put a new OEM in my '90 4Runner - it was 82 months old and I was having starter problems. Turns out it was the starter, not the battery. My original lasted 81 months, the second only 54 months.
I got 3 years out of mine, and it corroded everything around it-I had to repaint the mounting tray because it ate all the paint off. My 04 Sequoia battery did the same thing.
Some of you mentioned that you left your lights on. I thought the Tundra's killed any lights that were left on after about 10-15 minutes. Is this correct?

My truck will turn the lights off automatically if my truck is off and I open my door, but my brother turned them off then back on after the truck was off so he could load stuff into his house. That is how my battery died just that once.
As far as I know there is no kill switch that kicks in after any amount of time.
