I am new here so hello. I have owned and still own two Toyotas. A 91 4X4 truck, 22RE and a 2000 Tundra Limited 4X4. Recently drove the Titan. I like it a lot. I like the front too. I like all of it.
This is the thing, as much as I like Toyota they simply offer nothing to compare. My Tundra came without a LSD for good grief. The Titan has limited slips, Dana axles, Traction Control, a monster engine that gets better mileage than the Tundra, more room, more go power, more everything for less money. What is up with Toyota anyway . I have decided to wait a few more years to get a new truck but it will be something other than a Toyota unless they give me a complete package off the dealer lot. It cost me a 1000 dollars total cost to install a limited slip that comes in the Titan standard it seems and the Titan has everything and more than any other truck and costs less money. Did I mention it could dust a supercharged Tundra most likely--stock--it really goes . The Titan rules, the Tundra sucks it's exhaust. Toyota---you better do something or you have lost a loyal customer. J

Keywords: Build Quality, Reliability, and Resale Value. Although the verdict is still out on the Titan, I will bet my next paycheck that Toyota will continue to be superior to Nissan in all 3 of these key areas. So you may fly by me in that Titan but remember, the turtle wins the race.

Two4x4, actually, Sport Truck magazine picked the Titan as sport truck of the year, but what I find interesting is; the Tundra D/C they tested it against had a TRD supercharger. It was SLIGHTLY faster than the stock Titan. I'm guessing it wouldn't take much in the way of modifications for it to outrun a supercharged Tundra.

Default F150 vs. Ram vs. Sierra vs. Titan vs. Tundra

I got a chance to go tonight to the Toronto International Auto Show with my girlfriend. What I was most interested in seeing was the fullsize trucks and a few of the cars that were also on display that interested me. There were a few suprises. Remember these opinions are based on just sitting in the vehicle and not actually operating the truck.

I will also add other vehicles when reviewing the trucks. But for the most part this is about the trucks.

First off I must say the BMW's are boring (no offence to anyone) and Mercedes Benz feel very cheap compaired to some of the other vehiicles that were on display. I also have NO interest in Audi or Lincoln for that matter as well as Acura.

Anways on to the real reason why I was there:

Ford F-150: I am not sure about anyone else but this truck seemed a little boring. It is all new this year and the exterior of the vehicle was alright at best and the interior was nice but I think it is a little overated. The interior felt very well built but it just didn't seem all the appealing to me. The seats were comfy and I never did see the sticker price for the fully load F150 that I sat in.

I will add that the F250 and F350 that were next to the F150 section was quite interesting and anyone who needs more than a full size truck should get the F250. These things are what I classify as a "Truck"

Dodge Ram : I never liked the Dodge Ram ever but after the auto show I do have some new respect for the vehicle. The Ram was very bit and roomy inside and it had a very long and deep dash that I was not to sure if I liked it but I think I did. The materials inside the Ram felt of good quality and felt very durable and the location of the switches and controls were well laid out and very simply to navigate with. The center armrest was well designed and laid out very well and overall visibilty was good. When observing the engine compartment I noticed that there was a plasitic covering in front of the radiatior which I am not too sure of how it works. I seemed like a bug shield but I have no idea if the radiator needs air to flow through. Anyways I was impressed with the Ram and so was my girlfriend.
MSRP: 52,000 with the high end package and diesel option and transmission.

GMC Sierra: I must say that I was not at all impressed with the vehicle. I sat in three or four Sierras, Denalis, and Silverados not to mention Escalades and right off the bat I must say that these vehichles use the cheapest material in passenger vehicles that I know of. I easily removed the dash covering that was clamped on. I also was not impressed with all the gaps between the panels and the VERY boring monotone color of the pickups. The Escalade was $78,000 and felt very cheap like I was sitting in the pickup. The seats of the Sierra were nice but nothing to brag about and the front passenger seat room felt very limited. What I did like was the there were endless options and feature that are available on these vehicles.
MSRP: $60,950 for a SLT Duramax Diesel with Allsion Transmission. There were not power extendable mirrors and the trun signals were not in the mirrors.
I used to be a GMC guy but overall I was not impressed with the Sierra nor was my girlfriend.

GMC Canyon: A quick little thing about the Canyon is that the interior materials and build quality are far ahead of the S-10 and the Silverado and Sierras.

Nissan Titan: I must say that I was validating my free parking stub at Nissan when I was looking at the other vehicles at Nissan when I remmember that there was a new truck called the Titan. I really didn't care much for the Titan. The outside seems ok but those oversized crome mirrors have to go. I was impressed that the compartment and hood seemed much shorter that I thought. Inside the Titan was mixed. I did not like the way Nissan has so many controls and buttons and I also did not like the fact that the memory preset buttons for the drivers seat was so low on the door panel that you have to bend over to reach them. Maybe they are than way because you will press the button before entering but I just didn't like where they were placed. The interior materials were mixed. So of the interior materials were very nice but some were a little to flimsy. Overall the Nissan Titan is an ok truck that will serve their owners well but I would not drive one myself based on what was inside.

Toyota Tundra: The only pickup truck that was available the public with no leather seats or high end package. Although a limited Double cab was on display it was positioned high up on a stand where the interior was unavailable to the person. The Toyota Double did feel bigger from the outside compared to the Access cab that was parked behind it. Out of all the trucks that were at the autoshow. The Tundra felt the least luxurious when not equipped with leather and other options compared to the other truck manufacturers lesser end models. Another way to put is that the Dodge Ram felt most luxuirous with the least options. The Tundra feels like a plumbers truck when not eqquipped with the limited option. However, my own Tundra Limited felt more luxuirous then the other high end model trucks that were available. The Tundra double cab did have a nice rear seat however I would of liked to sit in a limited model and compare. I have sat in a limited Tundra at the dealer but not back to back with a SR5 or base model.
Over all I did like the Tundra's styling the best but the interior needs some more feature and a better and more upscale look and feel when the truck is not a limited model.

My rankings.

Best Interior Room: Dodge Ram.

Best Dash Design: Dodge Ram/Toyota Tundra Limited

Most upscale feel when not equipped as a high end model: Dodge Ram

Best Cupholders: Toyota Tundra and Dodge Ram

Best Exterior Styling: Toyota Tundra Double Cab and Access Cab.

Best Build Quality: Dodge Ram/Toyota Tudra and Ford F-150

Most user friendly dash design was the GMC Sierra with the controls angled toward the driver but for individual controls was the Tundra with three simple rotary dials.

Most interesting feature: Was the enormous center armrest and space of the Dodge Ram.

The Best Seats: Well they really go to the King Ranch edition Ford Superduty. They need to be put into the F 150

Most Overated interior: Nissan Titan

Most Underated interior: Dodge Ram

Vehicle that needs the most improvement: GMC Sierra and Silverado.

Truck that impressed me the most: (Interior standpoint): "Dodge Ram"

no surprise here - isnt that why we all paid more for our toyota trucks than domestics are selling for new? - it all comes around , my buddy just bought a new denali , sticker was $50,000 and he picked it up for $38,000. i laghed at him and bet him my $33,000 (with s/c) tundra would list a higher price in nada than his 38k gmc within 3 years....guess who will win that bet domestics dump so fast you would need a 3 year loan to keep from going upside down on the sob.

This is my first post on TS. I am the proud new owner of a Tundra DCab SR5 TRD. This is my first Toyota. I've previously owned a 96 Ford Ranger POS, and a 99 GMC Sierra also a POS. I test drove all the current offerings which all priced out within a few thousand of each other. The domestics offering major incentives and more willing to deal. Some had enough power to tempt me, but I walked away from the domestics mostly because of prior experiences with poor build quality. It came down to the Titan and the Tundra and a second round of test drives. I've always believed that buying the first year of a brand new model is never a good idea, and although the Titan has way more power, it's interior is a letdown. Cheap Plastics abound and the demo which had less than 2000km had enough squeeks and rattles to threaten my long term sanity. My Tundra on the other hand is like a bank vault. Only time will tell if I made the right choice. With Toyota's reputation for quality I'm feeling pretty confident.

Default Most Reviews Seem to Look Short Term

Having read a bunch of reviews on 1/2 ton trucks, they seem to skip long term reliability and usability(consumer's report is about the only one that covers reliability.) Yes, when you look at pure numbers, its easy to see who wins based on number comparisons and a short term experience with the truck (drove it for a week and liked this/hated that.) And yes, the Titan looks like the winner. But what really matters, is what each of us wants in a truck and how each of us will use it. If you trade a truck every two years, just about any maker will get you there. If you keep it for 10 or so years, well whats hot and new takes a back seat to whats a proven performer (meaning you probably use a different set of criteria than most auto reviewers use.)

Maybe when I trade my D/C in 10 years I will look at Nissan . But until then, Love My Toyota, and yes, it is simply a nice truck that I like driving!

I find this quote quite interesting. I have an '03 SR5 Access Cab with the TRD package. I decided against the Limited because of the leather (didn't want it) and the dealer said he would have a hard time getting the Limited with the cloth option. It is totally debadged (even took that cheesy V8 emblem off the grill). I have had many compliments on my ride but none have said it felt like a "plumbers" truck (whatever that means).

Although the Tundra made the "most satisfying" list they pair it with the Avalanche which I thought was a POS. But I must admit since they removed the Avalanche cladding it does look a lot better

CR usually has a poll after a 1 to 1/2 a year of use in which i rated my tundra perfect on everything. after the 2 years, i take my vote back on a lot of that now....

CR is an ok magazine but they also tend to change their results after grading them good on everything else. if problems are found they tend to go back and change the findings. The tundra also has always had high markings with CR.

do you agree vs the rest on full sized trucks? i do, but i dont base my buying power on CR i base it off product.....

Working from memory here, but as I recall reading my issue yesterday morning CR pretty much loved everything about the Tundra. Didn't like a whole lot about the avalanche mechanically, reliablility, or anything else.

Gotta love my truck- espeically the closer it gets to being paid off!

Some people have issues with CR, but I think other car and truck magazines reviews are more biased than CR. "Other" magazines might be biased based on advertising dollars whereas with CR their magazine sales are closely tied to how credible their reports are. If they lose credibility their sales are in the dumper and dont think they dont know that.

You got that right! Maybe I got lucky, but to date (knock on wood) I have not had any major problems or issues with my truck that was not covered by the warranty. Since day one of my purchase I have not babied my truck at all.

I actually look at my truck and think I have a 3 year old truck that has performed exceptionally well for what I paid. I know in time and being out of warranty I will have issues, ie: not starting and kickin' the tires 'cuz I'm running late for work.

But haven't most of us on the board had problems with vehicles we've owned in the past as they get more miles and age?

Just my .02
