Default Standard Comparisons Big 3 vs. Tundra

Somewhere along the line, i came across the misconception that the tundra's 4.7L was inadequate compared to similarly sized engines offered by the big 3 trucks. how does the tundra 4.7L V8 compare to the 4.7L Magnum (Ram) 4.6L Triton (F-150) and 4.8L Vortec (Silverado) concerning horsepower, torque, towing capacity, acceleration numbers, etc. and all numbers related to the performance of these engines? for now, it seems to me the i-force edges out/blows away all the competitor's similarly sized engines (ranging from 4.6-4.8 Liters).

Last year during the dyno run a 2002 Dodge Ram with the 5.2 put down 164 horsepower and 253 lb ft. of torque. A 2002 Chevy vortec 4800 (270 crankshaft horsepower and 285 TQ) put down 196 horsepower and 241 lb ft. of torque. My stock Tundra put down 271 lb ft. of torque and 204 horsepower and it's rated at just 245 crankshaft horsepower.

See the attachment for the torque comparison graphs. The Toyota is red, Dodge is blue, and Chevy green.

Just got my newest copy of CR and they rate The Tundra DC their top pick as compared to the #2 F-150, #3 Titan, #4 Silverado, #5 Ram all quad cabs. It does give kudos to the others for towing capacity but what's up with the Titan's max payload 1105 lb. but 9400 lb. towing capacity?

My neighbor just bought 2 weeks ago an '04 Ram 1500 5.7 hemi quad cab and I gotta say it's a beautiful looking truck and hauls some serious butt but OMG it rides like crap and my Corolla has more rear leg room and more comfortable back seat. His wife drove it and then went shopping with mine and came back telling him she wants a Sequoia because it rides like a Lexus as compared to that thing . Plus he has to bring it in next week for a couple "small" problems he won't elaborate on.

Haha - just wait 'till those "small problems" start multiplying into "big problems"!! Every Dodge I've owned since the mid '70s has been a major bee-otch. I have to keep reminding myself of that fact, because that Magnum and the 300C sure do look sweet!

Unfortunately, I think Daimler Chrysler products' beauty IS only skin deep.

Default Consumer Reports ranks the Tundra DC #1

This was mentioned in another post but I thout I would give it its own thread.

Source: CR July 2004, "A Truck for All Reasons"

""Crew Cab Pick-ups > The Toyota Tundra DC Tops Group of Passenger-Friendly Pick-ups"

They tested an DC SR5, and compared it to ....(RANKED)
2. Chevy Avalanche 1500
3. Ford 150 XLT
4. Titan SE
5. Silverado 1500 Z71
6. RAM 1500

They really liked the Tundra's V8 and engine, powertrain, ride and reliability. The Tundra was the most "well rounded" in this obviously passenger/family biased evalution. The slowness and lighter towing capacity were benignly forgiven.

The redesigned F150 is much improved and the review was overall very flattering.

The Titan has a big engine and is fast but they felt the interior to be of cheap plastic. Reliabilty is unkown and they described the 1105 lbs. payload is "meager.'

The Silverado's handling is ungainly and ride stiff. They liked the full time 4WD. It is a CR RECOMMENDED.

They didn't like the MPG of the Dodge at all. Weren't impressed with the ride, noise, brakes , fit and finish either.

The #2 Avalanche was not reviewed.

Just FYI.

Scott

Thumbs down Car & Driver Rankings

(I apologize in advance if this has already been posted and discussed)

About a week ago while channel surfing I came across a Car & Driver comparison test of the 5 double cab trucks. I think it was on Spike TV. They put the trucks through tests both on and off road (mainly in sand dunes...at least that's all they showed). Their rankings were (1st-5th): Nissan, Ford, Dodge, Toyota and Chevy - but 2nd, 3rd and 4th were all separated by one point. I think the overall impression of the Tundra is that it does everything well but nothing outstanding. And of course they still have issues with the 7/8 scale. The one thing that Consumer Reports is big on that I think C&D completely ignores is reliability. Regardless of performance, I personally would never own a daily driver vehicle that does not rank high in terms of reliability. CR agrees with that while most other reviews don't weight it as much, at least as far as I can tell. Anyway, I posted the link below if you want to see the details.

This is the thing, as much as I like Toyota they simply offer nothing to compare. My Tundra came without a LSD for good grief. The Titan has limited slips, Dana axles, Traction Control, a monster engine that gets better mileage than the Tundra, more room, more go power, more everything for less money. What is up with Toyota anyway . I have decided to wait a few more years to get a new truck but it will be something other than a Toyota unless they give me a complete package off the dealer lot. It cost me a 1000 dollars total cost to install a limited slip that comes in the Titan standard it seems and the Titan has everything and more than any other truck and costs less money. Did I mention it could dust a supercharged Tundra most likely--stock--it really goes . The Titan rules, the Tundra sucks it's exhaust. Toyota---you better do something or you have lost a loyal customer. J
I researched Titan and Tundra DC pretty carefully two months ago in my area and found differen things from what you describe. Titan has optional real locking axle listed in literature as "late availability." Local dealer did not have any with locker. No front LS or locker as you imply with "limited slips." Found plenty of Tundras with and w/o rear limited slip. More mileage? The magazine tests I found reported Titan about same as Tundra in head to head comparisons. Less money? Not in my town, and Tundra offered easy to get zero interest. Titan had several options that I didn't want that drove cost way up like bed tie down rails at $900! Nissan was less willing to deal. More room? I felt both crewcabs had plenty of room, and the Tunda bed is about 7 inches longer so I can sleep in it with a topper (I am 6'2.")

Tundra seemed more refined. Quiter with less hunting for gears with 5 speed auto, and loud Titan muffler sounded cool at first but irritating after a while. Didn't like big mirrors and front pillars that block driver's view, and I was looking through tint area of windshield even with power seat lowered. One important safety gap in Titan: no head rest for middle rear passenger. I haul kids a lot and understand the common danger of head injury in a rear ender without headrests.

Titan seemed geared to guys who wanted to make a macho statement, while Tundra seemed geared to handling and refinement. Probably the Titan will be a good truck reliability wise, but we won't know for sure for several years. My opinion is the Titan is a fine truck, but it in no way is a hands down winner for buyers like me. Not saying your opinions don't count, just that my priorities and conclusions were different.

All 4x4 Titans come with ABLS "Active Brake Limited Slip" which work by applying the brake to a spinning wheel which distributes torgue to the other wheel(both front and rear). I found it worked incredible in both off-road(loose sand) and on-road (icy conditions). This is probably one area in which I definately like the Titan heads and tails above the competition. My wifes Sequoia has traction control and stability control but it de-nuts the engine when making adjustments. I love it for my wife(as I don't have to worry about her on icy roads) but hate it for myself. The Titan also has an option of VDC vehicle dynamic control which acts similar to Toyota's system and once again cuts power from the engine when sensing wheel slippage.

I am trying to decide between the Toyota DC and the Titan as my 4-Runner now has 235,000+ on the odometer. Love all the Titans "Ideas". Love Toyotas execution.

My brakes have been good to me. Everyone that drives my truck....when I say everyone I mean, my g/f, my family, and my maintenance guy.

Says that the brakes are very sensitive. I have had people who "THOUGHT" I was too close and decided to slam brakes in front of me, and each time. (ONLY 2-3 times) the brakes came through. I have heard about brake problems, but 33k and this thing hasn't acted up yet. Should I keep a lookout for the brakes.

I looked closely at the Titan before I purchased my 2004 Tundra. I still own a 1984 4X4 Nissan king-cab since it was new and it still performs well, but I needed more power (V8) for towing a boat up hills and my Dodge(Big Mistake) transmission went out. The selling factors for me was that where I park the truck in my garage is tight and the Tundra(Access Cab) is 3 inches narrower and 6 inches shorter than the Titan. The real selling factor was that the Tundra handles very nicely like a luxury vehicle whereas the Titan drives like a tank. The Titan has a lot more power and a lot more extras for less then the price of the Tundra, so it was a close call for me. But I didn't want to buy a first year product because they tend to have design problems. Since I needed the truck ASAP the Tundra won. Hope I made the right decision but it seems to me that an almost $30,000 vehicle could at least have disc brakes on all four.

Cool Trucks rated on MSN.com

I don't know if any of you have seen this, but it has the top ten trucks. Tundra ranked 6th place. If you look at the reliability section after you select a truck you will notice the Tundra took a pretty good hit on the engine department in 2002. It does not show ratings for the 2003 which I have, but I thought Tundra would have done better.

You may be happy to know that the July 2004 issue of Consumer Reports picked the Tundra #1 over the Silverado, Ram, F-150 and the Titan. They won't recommend anything with poor reliability.

I am glad to hear how happy you are with your Titan. I couldn't find a salesman who understood the Titan enough to really explain the 4x4 features to me. I understood that the ABLS was on it but could not find out several things:
does ABLS brake all four wheels to a stop when all four wheels have poor traction? I have heard other brands do this in certain circumstances such as when all four wheels areon sand or snow the computer brakes the vehicle to a complete stop as they try to eliminate spin.

Also, since you have ABLS on all four wheels why does Titan have a "late availability" locker on rear? Is not this redundant if the ABLS serves the same basic purpose?

Finally, I did understand that the VDC and antilock brakes in the Titan stops working when 4LO is used, as these features can really mess up off road performance when some slippin and slidin is required. Toyota does the same thing on some of ther models with stability control. Does the traction control keep working even when the stability control and anti-lock is disabled? The Tundra antilock is supposed to stop working in 4LO for this reason. If the Nissan salesman had known more about his product I would have been more interested possibly in the Titan. The Tundra salesman was rebuilding an old Land Cruiser and he could explain the various Toy 4x4 systems in detail (Torsen, limited slip, lockers, anti spin, full time, part time, yada yada). I wish the Tundra had a electric, switchable locker option like the Tacoma 4x4 has.

If you see a green DC stuck up to my axles, throw me a strap as you go by!

Default Tundra Reviews

On carreview.com, many of the owners gave the Tundra very poor reviews. Is car review is good sampling? How would you Tundra owners in this forum respond to that? Thank you.
