Ive owned this vehicle for 3 years now. I still love the truck but i have had the same issues that most have had here. When i got the truck the tires had flat spots on them. After two trips back to the dealer they ................Yeah right! Sounds like poor engineering to me. Over all ive been happy with it, i guess because i owned a pontiac before this and the problems were fewer in the tundra. Currently im waiting to see how the Nissan Titan does, it might be time to trade it in!
Sounds like this guy did not...REPEAT did not take care of his truck. Had he been aware of all these things, all preventative measures could have been taken.
I got my Consumer Reports annual auto issue today. It has the updated ratings for all vehicles, and "The Best" in each class of cars and trucks...Best Full size pickup, Tundra,"The performance of the Tundra has been our benchmark for full sized pickups."As far as GM and Ford, GM, "Were it not for its disappointing reliability record, this competent pickup would be a... recommended model." Ford, "While no longer a stand out in it's class, the F-150 still offers some basic strengths....poor performance in an offset-crash test prevents us from recommending it." Repair record, based on the average of all vehicles from '99-'01, Tundra is 40% better than average, F-150 is about 18% better than average, GM and Chevy range 30-50% worse than the average. CR has not tested the new Dodge yet, and it's too new to get a reliability rating, but past Rams have been average to below average. But we all knew we had the best truck already!

Hey Steve,
Of course we all know... what the "BIG" question here is... don't we! WHERE'S THAT "OH-SO-WONDERFUL" "Titan" rank in all this.
My guess is... simply put... it... "DIDN'T"!!
Can I get an... "awe... that's too bad"! Oh well, some folks are just "gluttens" for punishment.
Yeah, I did a lot of research before getting my Tundra. I've always wanted one as long as I've been driving and my Mom has had her Camry. She has over 60,000+ miles and it is still going strong without any problems. I wanted a Toyota because of their quality, and strong reputation for reliability. After experiencing first hand the quality of a Chevy truck (S-10, 9000 miles, had a new transmission put in) I knew my next vehicle would be a Toyota. I was originally looking at the Matrix because I wanted something that could haul a lot of stuff, and also people when needed. It was my Mom who appropriately pointed out the Matrix was a joint effort between Toyota and GM. That changed my mind. With her prodding (she also not-so-secretly wanted a Tundra), I picked out the color I wanted, and after talking them down a bit drove off the lot with one of the vehicles of my dreams.
In april i thought it was about time i traded in my old tundra so i first went to the "big 3" and test drove their offerings. none of the big 3 really tickled me.
Then i though i would go test drive the all new much hyped overly "hyped" Mr Titan. well i walked into the local dealership and they got one sitting on the floor. So i jump in and look around. Salesman comes to me and says " yup this titan will be a vast improvement over that tundra you got parked out there" nice sales pitch dont you think. Then he says " we also got the most headroom the class", then i say " so then howcome the top of the windshield is in line with my eyes and the seats all the way down" (helps if you have a windshield thats height compliments the "most headroom"
But overly i was impressed with the interior space and layout, not so much the qaulity. so i ask if i can test drive one.
walk outside and jump into a kingcab XE. right away i notice that the material stitching is coming out of the center part of the bench seat. i point at it and say something to the salesman and continue fiddling with the stereo and other goodies.
Then i proceed to start it and take the E brake off. Wait a minute the E brake light is still on, how can that be? i push the E brake again and then disengage it again, still the light is on.
I turn to the sales man and say " better send this, what did you say? vastly improved truck? back to nissan". " on second thought send my 90K tundra with with so they can look at it and have something to aim for".
I speak my mind.
I felt sorry for him and told him to give me a card and i will be back to look at the 05s with one of my employees as a beater truck for work.
nice truck but there are alot of issues that they need to sort out and fix and they got a long way to go, i dont care how much "power" you have or how "big" your product is, if it dont work, i dont want it. and if you want it with such issues, i am glad you have all the money to spend to help find the problems and get them fixed, and no i never such issues with my tundra.
After that i went to the toyota dealer, bought a tundra DC and i now have 30 odd thousand miles on it and i have not had a single problem with, i drive gravel roads all day every day as a Agriculture business owner and there isnt EVEN A RATTLE. i tow anywhere from 3000-7000 pounds daily and have more than enough "power" to get me up to speed and from A to B.
Well put, went up to the local Toyo dealer and I was looking at the new 05 DCs, they only had a few. I found it quite nice inside, but for some reason they had P245s on it. I looked like a new Ford with the big exterior and small tires. However I ran into an older Tundra owner wanting to trade for a new Tundra he had 90k on his truck. The Texas Editions were there, but there weren't the regular decals/stickers, they were a hard shaped plastic. I wish I could explain, better but there were different then the ones down in DFW??
Still had the same new truck smell. Another added feature is the "Luminized spray" everything under all the wheel wells were sprayed with some kinda liner, really kept things looking good, however it rubbed off a little to the touch. Anyone know what I am talking about.
Can't wait to pay off the truck, enjoy it for a few years, and upgrade to dc when its been in production for years, and hopefully made in SAN ANTONIO, TX
Hope I made the right decision but it seems to me that an almost $30,000 vehicle could at least have disc brakes on all four.
I am beginning to believe that 4 wheel disk brakes are nothing more than a marketing tool. They may be more practical on high performance cars. On my old 89 Hilux with over 230,000 miles the original brake shoes still performed flawlessly. Also i think drum brakes better hold a vehicle on a steep incline with the parking brake engaged. The big rig 18 wheelers still don't use disk brakes.
I agree drums are better than disks in many areas...

People talk about disk brakes like they are an overall improvement over drums. This has not been true in my expierience with cars/trucks. Toyota rear drums are extreamly reliable and very long lasting. They also hold very well when the parking brake is engaged. The brakes in general on all my past toyotas have been excellent. The front disks naturally wear quicker than the rears but often last over 50,000 miles. The shoes on toyotas wear very slow and can easily go over 100,000 miles before needing replacement. I always use factory replacements for the brakes and have found them to be unbeatable. I just want to add I own a construction company so am always hauling materials/tools -so I do work the truck like it was intended.

Has anyone ever had the experience of "WET" drum rear brakes?
If so how well did it stop? thanks in advance GG
I do have to admit in this discussion that I loved the 5th brake on my 78' FJ-40 (that I was forced to sell...get married and figure it out ) Anyone know why the fitfh brake lives on in history but not in current production, seems like if you wnated some true brake system control the fitfh brake would come in handy...
