Default Rust "How I deal with it"

Since some of our trucks are getting some age I thought I'd share how I'm dealing with it.
Here is the before on my rusted axle:

I sprayed it with CLR and took a wire brush to it on day one.
Jelmar | All Kinds of Dirty, One Kind of Clean

Day two: I sponged rust converter on it and let it sit over night.
I bought what Lowes' had on hand. If I had it to do over again I would have used a spray. Be sure to use gloves, mask and eye protection. This is an acid that you are putting on your metal. If auto zone had not been out of Rust Fix I would have just gotten that.

Day Three: I sprayed the axle off with the hose and wiped off the dust after it dried.
Then I spayed Krylon Tough Rust flat black all over.

Here is the after:

Basically here is the view I take. This is not a fix, it's a lifestyle of dealing with rust. It's going to happen and this is how I deal with it.

Hope this helps.
Peace,
GATR

That looks pretty

I do the same basic thing with my frame since I am worried about that the most. I scrap off what I can and I actually took a wire wheel to it last time. Then I sprayed it with a rust preventing spray. I'm sure it won't last....but it is a temporary fix and at least prevents it from getting any worse. And you are right.....it is a lifestyle and it will be a constant battle.

You gotta love the lifestyle. The process, the frustration, the satisfaction of kaizen. (japanese word for continuous improvement also Toyota's main philosophy). Good post USAF.

I used rust converter from the parts store. Just lightly wire brushed all the loose rust off and sponged it on as well. It converts to black primer in 24 hours and won't rerust. I'm doing the truck a little at a time and have noticed that the stuff I did last year around this time before our season of 102" of snow still looks nice and black. This time around I sprayed a rubber coating on the parts I did so that it won't come back. Pain in the ***, but better than rusting the truck body through
