Thumbs up go for the tundra

I'm with the consensus here....

I recently went from a Tundra to a Tacoma Double Cab because I needed a smaller truck with a canopy to fit in my garage... It wouldn't fit with the Tundra

Well, it's been just about nine months since I down sized and whenever I squeeze into my Tacoma, I realize how much I miss the Tundra-EVERYDAY!

The Tundra is a great truck and I really like what they've done with the 03. Go for the bigger truck, unless you have a small a** garage like me!

Just in case you don't have enough to think about, here's another one.

"V-6"

I have one and love it. They are less expensive, better mileage and perform just fine (unless you are towing big stuff), and you get everything in the SR5 that you would with a V-8.

Just a thought.

Question 2003 Tundra or Tacoma doublecab???

I currently own a 02' tacoma ext cab trd 4X4, but need more room...what would you all recommend....a doublecab tacoma, or a tundra? Pros and Cons of a 03' Tundra are what? I know how a tacoma V-6 drives because I own one, and I am sure the doublecab is the same, but is it worth the extra 3 thousand for the Tundra? Thanks for all of your help! Paul

IMHO there isn't as much back seat room in the Tundra as the doublecab? Is this the sort of space you're looking for?

Evidently heavy towing and hauling aren't a main concern since you currently own a Tacoma. The only drawback to the Tundra I can think of is the ext. cab, if your looking to haul adult humans around. For this reason I would get a double cab Tacoma but then you miss out on the V-8 and extra bed space, put a supercharger on the Tacoma but then your up to the price of a new Tundra. So I don't know it's kind of a toss up. If you can wait a year or maybe even more there should be a double cab Tundra or the Tacoma redesign may have the V-8 in it but who knows for sure?

Default Reasons to buy a Tundra over a Tacoma

1. Size and space
2. Super smooth V8 engine available. I consider it a sin not to get this engine with it being available.
3. Safety: Tundra is tops in class, Tacoma has been uneven in tests and is smaller.
4. Tacoma is due for a redesign next year I believe. Tundra still has a few more years. Resale is great on the Tundra, don't know about the Tacoma.
5. The Tundra is more refined and is a newer design.
6. How much difference is mpg is there really? Not sure here.
7. Price differential is maybe $3,000 on comparable age/equip models. This is recouped at resale, so there isn't that much savings with a Tacoma, just some fuel and interest.


That's about all I can think of

The Tundra is a great value... Funny thing though, I was considering going back to the Tundra (and not worrying about the canopy thing), and when I called the Toyota dealership they said they would be more than happy to offer me top dollar to trade in my double cab... Because, they can't seem to build them fast enough and can't keep them in stock for very long here!

So if you're considering a double cab, a 2001 "used" still resells for 21,500, only 2500 less than I paid for my fully loaded DC. They are holding their value well, too!

I'd certainly go for the Tundra if it fits your lifestyle! *sigh* it's a great truck man!

And about the V-8, I just want to make a few points.

1. The mileage difference ain't that much.
2. It's a much more sophisticated engine.
3. It's smooth.
4. It makes me smile when I step on the gas.

If you check out any decent car site, you'll see that the V-6 they use on the Tundra is not a new design, and has been around for several years. The V-8 is the new I-Force design and this is the same engine they use in the new $65k Lexus RX470, the $50k to $60k Land Cruisers, and the $40 to $50k Sequoia's. The fact they are putting this engine into these vehicles should tell you something.

I'll leave a little disclaimer here just in case, but i'm almost positive it's the same engine.

Trade in $$$ is completely negotiable though. If the dealership doesn't give you a figure you like then walk away. Nothing makes them give in quicker than you walking out the door. Even if you go home chances are they will call you back with a better offer.

If you are trading in a very clean low mileage vehicle they should give you a higher trade in amount. They want to make as much money as possible so they are going to low ball you on your trade in. They might offer you $15,000 but they will turn around and slap a price tag of $21,000 on it as soon as you sign it over to them. Your job is to get them closer to the $21,000.

It is the same engine in the Lexus and Sequoia (not sure about the Land Cruiser). It is tuned differently for the Lexus though and requires premium fuel.

Default V-8 essentially same,except iron vs alum block

I think you guys are dead on;the V-8 in our Tundra is practically the same motor as the pricy Lexus motor,except for the iron block VS aluminum on the Lexus.The iron is a little heavier,but more durable(and cheaper to make) so we make out fine.The Lexus motor is tuned for more high end power,and it might even have variable valve timing(not sure on that point),but we make out great getting a very smooth luxury car V-8 for our Mid priced pickups.
The Tacoma has great resale,probably better than the Tundra.The Tacos are also pretty easy for an individual to sell because of the good reputation for reliability and longevity(costing less makes it easier to sell also,of course).Some folks on this forum our having trouble selling their Tundra's because the new price(from a dealer who will discount,like Carson) is so close to their used prices(despite their having a lot of very nice,and very expensive add ons).I have sold 3 of my Tacoma's,for decent prices,but I think I would have a much harder time selling the Tundra because they are fairly expensive-even used.The Tacoma 4 cyl gets much better mileage-21 city vs 14 city-24vs 17 highway-than the Tundra,but the Tundra is so much nicer in every other way that I don't regret the MPG.The V-6 Tundra is only rated 1mpg better than the V-8,so that made it a very easy choice.It is a kick to stomp the pedal on the V-8,but the V-6 is just adequate,nice,functional,reliable,but no fun;sorta a bigger,roomier,smoother 4 cyl Tacoma.Have a good New Year,Charlie -near New Orleans

I went through a similar choice when we bought the Tundra. We originally were looking to buy a '03 Tacoma, Ext. Cab, 4wd, TRD, loaded. When we actually started to look at the double cab, it was about $1200($2000cdn) more or about $2500($4000cdn) more for the Tundra. After test driving a Tundra it was a done deal, there was no way I could not justify spending that little bit extra for all the benefits of the Tundra.
I do beleive that there is more leg room, both front and rear, in the double cab Tacoma.

Hey Max,

You gotta sacrifice one..either get a Tundra with lots of power and a huge bed but not the best room in the back and that goes the same for mileage..
Or
A 4 dr Tacoma with PLENTY of room in the back and front but with a small bed..bet you get better mileage for sure..

My case in point.Traded a 98 Ram for my Tundra.Dealer gave me $15,250.Two weeks later the truck is advertised for $20,999.I went to several area Toyota dealers determined to cash in on 0%.All of them gave me the same trade in price.I even went into Wisconson.But I did get a Tundra so I have no truck complaints(Dodge is GONE)!!

Agreed. My boss and wife always complained about the passenger side in my '94 p/u. The driver's side was nice, but with the 60/40 split bench, it was basically the same as an SR5 bucket.

The Tundra's captain's chairs are sweet, and I have not had a single complaint from any passenger... only compliments on the ride, quiet, and overall quality. My buddy is now pissed that he bought a convertible 325... wished he had bought a Tundra
