Something is surely wrong mine never drops to zero never goes below 1'4 mark no matter what.Let us know what you figure out.
Gonna have to second this. What the OP is describing is exactly the opposite of what I experience as normal oil pressure gauge operation. It drops when RPMs are low, then climbs as RPMs increase, usually within a range of 1/4 to 3/4. The fact that the gauge is reading something leads me to believe that there is something amiss other than an electrical issue. I'd be a little worried...

Well I am going to start with an oil change back to 5W30 and look up how to check the oil pressure sensor and guage. I went to Toyota today and the parts guy wasn't able to find an oil pressure sender part number {welcome to my world}

When you change back to the 5W30 oil, also install a new filter. There could be something wrong w/ the filter you just put in (I'm assuming you installed a new filter when you put in the 10W30 oil), like a sticking bypass.

I had a sending unit on a 3.0 ford 6 cyl act up too............it fluctuated too high , too low, almost nuthin, the connection had grease/oil all over it, I cleaned it , tightened it up and it is still working...........long and short of this is, my guess is the sending unit it's self , or the connection to it.
Last night after driving the truck for 15 minutes in city traffic I left it running in the driveway to watch the guage.
It stayed between zero and the 1/4 line {I know it isn't really 1/4 but I use that term as a reference} but closer to the zero line.
I removed the oil filler cap while the engine was running and could see oil circulating. I saw tiny air bubbles in the oil from it being circulated - I assume that is normal?
Here is another problem i cannot find 5W30 anywhere! I do not see where using 10W30 would matter - am I missing something?

as always my .02
Dang 6cyl engines!
I will check it with a mechanical guage while I am changing the oil - anyone know the specs for oil psi at idle and at rpms?

ok...seen this problem. Don't know if its same cause but I'd seen similar problems. Did you add any kind of snake oil when you change the oil? Often these additives are so sticky and thick that they can move slowly through the oil journals therefore when you let off the gas the pressure the oil pump is trying to create is released back into the pan and res.. i'd go with the sending unit if you arent using ANY kind of additive. if these two dont seem to catch it up then check the oil pump pick up screen.( sorry you'll have to pull the pan.) Snake oil huh? Oil has all the neccessary additives it needs to perform at its peak performances. try a thinner oil with no snake oils. hope at least some of this rambling was helpful..lol

No snake oil used, but the problem seems to have "corrected" itself.
I will tell you what I did but first I have another question - Why does it take almost 7 quarts of oil {book says 5.5} to reach the proper mark on the dipstick? Whether the dealership changes my oil or I change it myself it has to be topped off.
I checked the fluids before a long trip and everything was at its proper levels. Cruising down the turnpike at 70mph the pressure was holding steady just under the 1/2 mark. I brought the speed up to around 85-90 for a few minutes and the pressure held steady just under the 3/4 mark.
Since then the pressure gauge has been responding normally.

the 10w-30 and 5w-30 don't make that much of a difference no...toyota says you can use 10w if no 5w is available but at the next oil change they say to go back to 5w so your ok with using 10w at least once in a while when you can't find 5w. sometimes the auto stores sell out of my 5w but i usually look at other stores or ask if they have some in the back, never had to use 10w though so never seen how engine runs differently or anything like that. what gets me is they stock equal amounts of both, usually, and the 5w is used more commonly from what i have seen.
p.s. is the 5.5 with a filter change? or without? but that sounds like a weird issue idk what it takes to fill it because i have the maintanence program so toyota does the work and i just check fluids and they are always good so i can't help ya on that one.

I think you may be looking at the Imperial measure not the US measure which is 6.5 qts with a filter change, I like some others find it takes 7 US qts with filter to hit the full mark on the dipstick.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to siphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
If your engine doesn't consume ANY oil it will seize???
Some people should not be allowed access to tools without books!!!

I just checked the book again and it states 5.5 US qts or 4.6 Imperial qts with oil filter change. For the 5VZ-FE
Like yours - mine takes almost 7 qts
MAYBE THERE WAS A DIPSTICK RECALL!!!
