Default gas filler repair for 03

hi guys new here. did a search and found there was a problem with the filler neck on the 03 tundra fuel tank. first i'm hearing about it but my check eng lite is on and the fuel cap doesnt seem to close like it used to. my question is what is this fuel filler mod consist of and is it covered by the dealer or do i have to pay. the truck has 77,000 miles so warranty isnt an option. all started after jersey inspection where they take the cap off and pressure check it. the guy didnt put it on correctly and the lite came on soon after. could just be coincidence who knows. anyway, any insight would be helpful.

So was their a code thrown a CEL come on? here is a tutorial by Shall36 i think but it explains the DIY portion since that is about what most do after warranty is expired! have you reset code and tried a new gas cap? Might not help but worth a try since i would wanta a new gas cap even with the replacement of the filler tube!

hog wild thanks for the info this helps alot. i have a buddie that has an analyzer and before we do anything i'm gonna put it on the truck. now i have the codes also so that helps. looks like a good idea to replace the filler and cap anyway. and for 100 bucks its not alot of money to spend on a truck that has been virtually trouble free for 6 years. thanks for the help. i will post what i find. i'm surprised i have not seen this problem since it looks like it shows up much earlier.

I recall the recall. My '03 had the work done under warranty.
However

The trucks have an emmisions warranty. If I recall correctly it's 80,000 miles or 6 years. This may be a way to get the dealer do the work - no charge.

Just a thought.

Toyota would not fix mine under warranty...I believe I was literally at 3 yrs and 2 months or something like that. Filthy animals. What's worse is that my extended warranty would not cover it because there was a TSB on this problem. Toyota shafted me good on this one...

Get an OEM gas cap from your Toyota parts counter for ~$25 and go to Auto Zone/Advance/etc and have them clear the code after you replace it. Don't waist your time on the dealer or your money on replacement gas caps at the car parts place. I had the exact problem you have and tried the $5 gas cap at Auto Zone. The check engine light came back on and I took my truck to the dealer thinking it had to be the filler neck problem. The dealer tried to get me agree to replacing my charcoal evap canister in addition to the gas cap. I just about spewed coffee out my nose when the "Babe" service writer came in to sell me on this. She said "It could have a crack in it." Yeah...right... I could have an extra $400 burning a hole in my wallet too.

+1 on buying a new gas cap first. My '03 started throwing the code all of a sudden; got a new cap and haven't looked back.

I just fixed this on mine with a new Toyota gas cap. I tried a locking cap from Autozone but it was worse. My old Toyota cap gasket was hard and the new one is a lot softer and flexible. My engine light went back off after a couple days of driving.

(i have 5 toyotas and buy all my service parts there so i get a discount) reset the code and its been fine since. put about 300 miles on it and no lite. thanks again for the advise.

Is anyone getting the P0441 and P0446 codes? I have a cheap replacement gas cap but it has been ok I guess for a couple years. What about the charcoal cannister? I used to top off but not anymore.
