Default Cold start no throttle response?

A little history 2002 Tundra V8 63,000 mi. Purchase new. I had a check engine code. Technician read code and was O2 sensor heator or something like that! He is a local mechanic and told me some sensors were difficult to remove (almost siezed) and would damage threads beyond repair if forced. He tried and said he could tell that it was going to be trouble if forced. I was having no driveability problems so we postponed repair until warmer weather. In the past month we have had a blast of cold weather. One morning I started it up no problem and as I went to apply gas, the pedal moved but the engine didn't respond? I had to push the pedal quite a ways down before the engine RPM's came up enough to make the truck move. Sensing something was wrong I shut it down and looked around visually and nothing seemed wrong. Started it up and it was fine.....completely normal. Has done it 3 times since each time a shut done and restart has cured the problem. Everytime was cold weather. My question with my check engine light already on from the O2 sensor I have no idea if it has thrown another code. Can someone tell me what might be my problem from my description? Thanks in advance!

not quite sure of your problem, but about how long do you let it warm up before trying to take off?

not sure if your is the same, but with mine i accidently unhooked the connector one day that goes to the throttle positon senor, it did the same thing as you described. The only thing is when i accidently disconnected mine it did it when it was cold and warm. So it could be something that controls the tps.

Most likely if you check codes again, you will get code 1121 for the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor. Pricey little part. Mine has acted up a couple times over a few years. I have not replaced yet. Been a while since it has screwed up... now watch... it'll happen tomorrow.

Two times that it has happened with a long warm up as I cleaned windshields and such. Other couple of times was start up an let idle for only a minute or two.

Go to your local autozone, NAPA, O'reileys or other automotive parts store. Most of them will scan your vehicle for free and give you the trouble codes. Or, buy a scangauge and check them yourself.

It happened again this morning at 6 degrees. I shut it off to restart for the usual fix...........was very hard to restart. Started a couple of times at a very slow idle and died. Cycled the key to off and on again and started and all was fine. I'm afraid one of these days it will decide it has had enough. My luck it will happen with my wife driving.

I own a 2000 Tundra, live in the artic cold of Alaska, and have experienced the very same problem. Like one of the previous posters mentioned, your problem is the accelerator pedal position sensor and it should throw codes 1120 and 1121. The kicker is the part costs about $500 and I have only been able to find it available through Toyota.

Count your blessings though. I have had the opportunity of experiencing the pedal going unresponsive while in motion. I pulled over and restart the truck which took care of the problem, but it was a little more nerve racking. Good luck.

If problem is o2 sensor, toyota will replace sensor and manifold up to 90k, that's what they did for me. Call toyota with vin and see if this applies to your rig.

On the O2 sensor, tell him not to force it. Just work it back and forth, spraying liberally with PB Blaster or WD40. It will eventually come out.
