Default Junk yard wheels?

Has anyone ever bought wheels from a junkyard? I want to get a new set of wheel rims (so I can powdercoat them black), but don't want to pony up the major $$ for brand new ones. Anyone know if junkyards will even sell the wheels off vehicles?

Many do. There is a junkyard called LKQ and they are all over the U.S. and on ebay. I got 3 enkei Deep six rims with tires from them for $250, for the three. Im sure they sell stock wheels also.

i got a set of 14" steel wheels with good tires from pick-n-pull in '01 for 15 bucks, total! don't see any deals like that anymore. they charge like 30 per wheel now. just do a good visual inspection to see if they are bent or damaged.

Has anyone here used Pick Your Part? I've never been there myself, but I've heard some mixed reviews about it. Either people love it or hate it.

it's pick-n-pull here. i used to use it and loved it until they raised their prices. it's supposed to be cheaper if you pull it yourself. the prices are pretty much the same if you buy it at a dismantler yard.

Inspect junkyard wheels very closely for cracks. Alloy wheels from wrecks might have cracks that might result in the wheel literally breaking later.

Check ebay and Craigslist. Call around to your local junk yards. Check with local dealers for take-offs. You can post wanted requests. Recycling parts is cool. I have been doing it for 40 years...

If Pick-Your-Part is anything like the Pick-A-Parts that I've been to then they are all right. It's like walking into any pull-it-yourself junkyard. But they do have rims set aside, already pulled for you and then whatever is still on the vehicles in the yard. I haven't been in a long time so I can't speak to pricing anymore. Best thing you can do is pay the few bucks to get in and look around. Take a breaker bar with a couple sockets and a hammer and flat chisel if you plan to pull them yourself. The hammer and chisel for the occasional rounded nut or a cooperative wheel lock nut.
