I second the motion from PuffnStuff. Definitely check everything out first to see if you have any existing leaks that may be made worse (or just more noticeable) by the synthetic. I started running Quaker State Q Torque Power 5W-20 and using a K&N oil filter in mine at 20,000 miles when I started all the mods to the motor. I change oil every 5000 miles on the dot and have had no issues whatsoever. I think it's worth the cost difference to help protect my motor with all the stop/start driving I do and the additional power added. If you don't do a lot of stop/start driving and have a stock motor, it may not be worth the difference to you--look at all the older cars still running from the sixties and seventies that never had synthetics...
On my first switch to synthetic, I went 160k only changing the filter every 10k. The filter is everything. Filter capacity goes down as you use it but filter efficiency goes up as you use it (filtering smaller and smaller particles over its life). Strangely, a filter is doing its best job just before it fails.
Now I've tempered a bit and only go 50k between oil changes and still go 10k between filter changes (and top off of course).
BTW, I tore that first motor down and it was the cleanest motor I've ever seen.
I've used Mobil 1 since about 10k miles on the truck I actually change every 12k miles and now I have 150k miles on the truck. It still runs like brand new. I put about 35 miles each workday of highway miles. Also, I have only used toyota oil filters.
I switched at 1,500 miles to Pennzoil Platinum with a Toyota OEM oil filter . Truck runs great . I change my oil out ONCE a YEAR. There are several great oils out there. To read up on all different kinds of oils go the BOBISTHEOILGUY.com. More info can be found there than you ever would want to know. Honest. WarDawg
sureandsteady,
I just posted a similar thread on my 2000 Tundra with 161,000 miles on it. I ended up making the switch last oil change a couple of weeks ago to Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w30. I am very pleased.
From the Mobil One web site for your truck with your miles they recommend; "Mobil 1 High Mileage 5W-30
A fully synthetic motor oil, Mobil 1 High Mileage 5W-30 is designed especially for higher mileage engines where conventional oil has been used. It reduces the sludge and deposits that conventional oils can leave behind."
my oh3 4x4 has 101k and i'm thinking of switching to synth. it is a weekend and baja truck. i bought it 7 months ago and have only put 4k on it. should the initial oil change be drained after X miles to get the sludge out and replace the oil, or just change at regular interval, whatever that is?

It wouldn't hurt to do it, but its not necessary. I would stick to a standard oil change interval for the first couple changes though, 3000 miles.

Based on my experience, ,and on some anecdotal evidence from a few other members, after the switch from dino to a full synthetic watch your oil condition closely. The detergent action of the synthetic formulations really do a good job cleaning sludge deposits as a result of dino use. After 2,500 miles on my wife's '03 4Runner V6, the oil was filthy. It was changed and has been quite clean ever since.

changed to mobil 1 on our 1997 avalon at 126k miles (when we bought it.) zero oil leaks before the change to mobil 1. zero oil leaks after the change to mobil 1. oil is changed every 10k. currently 202k miles with zero oil leaks. when the tundra hits 40k, then i make the switch to mobil 1 with 10k change intervals.
I have run Mobil 1 since appr. 10K in my 2002 Tundra. I have run one oil change with Valvoline full synthetic when Wally world couldn't stock Mobil 1. I swap filters at 3k to 3.5k and oil and filter at 6k or 7k. I now have 107k on the truck and it runs like new. I have always used Toyota OEM filters, but have now switched to Wix (Same as Napa gold). Never an issue. Never burns oil.

That has been my experience with synthetic oil. It will clean up an engine in short order and keep it clean.
I made the switch to synthetic at 90K with no ill effects whatsoever.

hi quick info. if you bought a used tundra, and you can get the info as to what oil was used. use that.
if your vehicle used reg. oil for 30,000 miles continue to use reg. oil. if it used syn. oil continue to use that.
never go back & forth.
or change after alot of miles.
i got this info from several different performence shop's.
how good is this info, i'm not to sure. but i only use reg. oil, but i change it every 2000 to 2500miles.
oil gets dirty from the dirt in the air passing through & into the engine.
so the cleaner the oil the less dirt in your oil.
so continue to use what ever they used before.
unless it's brand new. than use what you want, but do not change.

You can change to synthetic oil when ever you want, back and forth, mix it, doesn't matter. Synthetic does a much better job of protecting your engine and keeping deposits out. Only thing you have to look out for is if you already have an oil leak changing to syn could cause it to become worse as it cleans out all the dino deposits plugging the leak.
