Default Large metal chunk in trans fluid...

I recently had a transmission flush/filter change done for my '02 Tundra V8 (116k miles). Along with the usual metal shavings, we found a large piece of metal. I have attached a picture so you can see what I mean by large.

Mechanic advises that major trans work (ie rebuild) is inevitable. Also, I have recently got a DTC code for 'shift solenoid'.

My trip to the shop was prompted by a event that I described in a prior post (sudden, one-time shudder/jolt while driving, then difficulty shifting from park to reverse or drive ever since).

I have read on this (awesome) site about the OD planetary issues typical of my A340E transmission. I really want to keep this truck for a few more years...please advise my best way forward. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Wes

Mine is in the shop right now for a similar reason. Mine shifted hard into overdrive 6-7 times then started shifting fine again. I dropped the pan and found a few chunks like yours, along with a few pieces that looked like chopped up pencil leads. The tranny shop says it looks like needle bearings. I am getting a rebuild just to be safe. I don't want to risk the tranny grenading on a long trip, if I can help it.
