well the other day the engine stalled while i was driving. the check engine light came on then i couldn't start her back up. when i turned the key, it would crack as normal, but not turn on. the really weird thing was that after letting go of the key, it still cranked about 3 more seconds. finally after sweating and feeling really embarrassed in the traffic, she started up and i was on my way. no additional problems on the way home a few hours later.
i get home, plug in the odbII scanner and get an error. not an error code, but an error on the scanner. wtf??? i checked the unichip toggle switch and of course i don't remember if i had | or O pressed in, but O is pressed in. i also checked the gas cap and it seemed fine. while i was out there, i ended up changing the oil and cleaning the air filter. did a 20 mile errand and the cel went out. ok, must have been the gas cap. phew!
well, the next day, it stalled on me again. this time i was driving and was lucky enough to coast over to the curb. same thing. cel came on and weird cranking thing while trying to start. no problems on the way home. got gas later that day and changed the oem gas cap to an after market locking one. so far no issues but it's only been less than 30 miles since i placed the locking gas cap on.
here is why i suspect it. i bought a locking gas cap because i went on a business trip and left the truck in the airport parking lot. i was being paranoid. anyways, when i took the oem one off, i messed up that ring holder tether thing that lets it dangle when getting gas and now it does not rotate freely. after a while, i was getting really tired of the hassle of the locking gas cap, so i went back to the oem and just let the tether be free since it would not stay in the gas door properly. as i can recall, every now and then the engine would have some hesitation at a stop sign or light. usually a few days after filling up the tank. it would never really stall, but wanted to. do you think the stalling was really attributed to the gas cap? i like the ease of the oem, but if the locking cap will keep me safer while driving, then that's the ticket.

Well as far as the truck continuing to try and crank that is called the crank lock feature or something like that. If you pay attention when you start it all you have to do is bump the key and once the starter starts if you let go it will continue until the truck starts. Its pretty cool until you get behind the whell of a vehicle that doesn't do this it and it doesn't crank you look like a fool.

The gas cap not being tight happened to my wife's corolla. Right from the dealership. Long story short I was told that the only thing that will happen when the cap is not on right is that you get a check engine light for the emissions. The charcoal cannister does a pressure test and throws a code when there is a leak. It should not affect the vehicles performance. Just tighten the cap, reset the computer, by unplugging it or the negative terminal or whatever, and everything should be ok. Maybe Tundra's are different but still, seems strange that your truck would stall just from that. Maybe pm Mustang67408. He is a toyota mechanic.
