Am I the next victim of Tranny failure? 02 Auto V8

A few weeks ago my truck shifted really hard from 4th to 3rd during low speed breaking. The problem has now become more consistent.
Now I've noticed when my truck shifts into 4th / OD, there is a noticable whine coming from the transmission. When I lockout OD the truck drives fine.
I haven't dropped the pan yet but that's the next step.
Should I start shopping ebay for a replacement tranny?

I just bought one yesterday for 900. Salvage yard. My prob. was from plowing and reverse started to go first. Acted funny for about 10k miles then reverse stopped working altogether. That's when I started shopping. Several quotes from different dealerships were at 2700 for the Toyota rebuilt that come out of Kansas City.
