Default Anyone install a Train Horn?

I have had a couple of near miss traffic incidents recently, and I'm thinking my stock horn is not loud enough.

I previously installed a hella dual air horn system in my other car, and it is a little louder than stock.

A friend of mine installed a Shocker S4 from hornblasters.com and swears by it. I went to the auto parts store to look at a $40 air horn system, and the guy there discouraged me from getting it. He said he spent $500 on his horns too (sounds like pricing from hornblasters).

I really want to get a loud train type horn but not willing to spend $500 at this point. Are there any other options? Saw some full kits on ebay with compressor and all going for around $200. But I'm concerned about the quality, durability and reliability of these ebay kits...

to me if you want something to work with the horn 4wheelparts.com has a cheap electric horn system that will work for you, but you if you to go the true air horn way you can just go to a big truck stop and buy a compressor, tank and horn that are on semi trucks for a couple hundred bucks.

but if your your the type of person to go big or go home and want the entire couple block radius to here you then i would go for the true train horn which would be cool and would be the route i would go, that is just me though.

i have done the semi truck horns for work and are really simple but don't know the price or brand, i would be afraid about the ebay ones, i would go to a semi truck shop and ask those guys for there preference

You're not going to get a true air horn system for $500. Between the horns, the air tank, the compressor and other loose-end parts (hose, wiring, relays, etc.) I've got about $800 into my system.

But it will definitely scare the bejezus out of people.

Edit: Here are some pics of my system: Air Horns - Photo Gallery

This horn is pathetic

Here is good link to check out.

There is a crazy mofo from West(bygod)Virginia who put a actual train horn. He includes a sound clip with it.

Horn envy!

My friend bought a kit (as well as the local auto parts store, I think) from hornblasters.com. The shocker kit they have runs between $500 to $600. The guy at the parts store told me he spent around $500 too.

I know they have a quality kit.... But at this point not willing to spend even $500-$600. Wondering if there is any middle ground that would be almost as effective...

I know about scaring the bejezus out of people, I've seen videos like these (check out the guy's reaction at 24 sec).

YouTube - Train Horn Pranks In Atlanta, Georgia by HornBlasters.com!

I don't really want to use a horn to prank people though. After my near miss accidents (due to the carelessness of other drivers not looking before changing into my lane) and where I was blasting my horn for several seconds and got a late to little no reaction out of the other driver, I'm thinking a more effective horn may have helped in that situation.

got the hella air horns in my other car. it is louder than stock, approximately 2x. But I'm thinking if I am gonna upgrade might as well go the compressor/tank/train horn route since I have the other type of air horn already. I guess I'm just ambivalent about spending the $500 as the other upgrade air horns or even electric only cost around $40. I want more power/sound but I guess don't want to pay 10 times as much (or more) for an upgrade.

hi, there are many type's of train horn's. the real 1's are in no way 800.
but there are many to choose from, i suggest to go to a truck accessory store,
& look at them.
speed & truck world has about 5 set's set up.
also there are many other type's that are similar.
but again real train horns, will need alot of space,
and the tank is BIG! that hold's the air.
my friend has a set, under his dodge good god, are they huge, & long.
and the tank has to go into the bed.

again this is illegal, for those who care.
but they are a great safty item.

i wish i could put set's on my bike's for a$$ hole driver's out there,
that move over without looking or seeing a bike.
it would be nice to move them over instead of trying to kill us biker's.

What is your definition of a "real one"?

My horns are mounted to the crossmember beneath the rear driver's side seat. My 2.5 gallon tank sits between the spare tire and the rear bumper and the compressor is under the hood.

WOW! I was just going to post a question like this for myself. I took a chance and ordered from amazon a set of Hadley Bully Air Horns for $319.! I can't wait to get my hands on them. It's a complete setup that includes a compressor, air storage tank, w/ selenoid and switches, and an extra airhose to fill up tires, matresses, etc.. It's very loud with a rating of 133 db @125 psi that can be heard for over a mile. Here is a link if anyone would like to check it out.

Amazon.com: Hadley Bully Electric Dual Air Horn Kit: Automotive

I also have a '05 Access Cab. Does anyone have any installation experience here? Look out lame drivers, you're going to be changing your shorts! =)

I had the same problem and looked at FIAMM and Hella, but ended up with a stebel combination. I have the Stebel TM-80 Magnum (x2), OEM (x2), and air horn all going at the same time. Here's a pic of the install - more in my album....

Ok, well if it is illegal, then I'm out. I can't afford to spend $500 on something that is illegal which I could possibly be cited for by a police officer or at a safety check.

The same thing happened to me when I bought an HID kit with no reflectors. After reading up on it I found out that apparently this type of kit, although inexpensive blinds oncoming drivesr and is a safety hazard and illegal. So I got rid of my kit without installing it.

I read somewhere on another website that they claim blowing a train horn in traffic is in fact a safety hazard and not a safety device...???

how much louder are the Stebels compared to stock (if one disconnected the stock and only ran the Stebels/no air horn)?

I think I'm looking for the loudest I could go legally while still remaining pretty cost effective. Stock doesn't seem to be loud enough.

I do not know what will make it "legal". I've seen different ratings from dB, to dB at a certain distance from the horn. My interest was not to make it fire truck loud and not to have trumpets hanging from my radiator. The stebel TM-80's as a pair I think are rated at 139dB.... I'd recommend keeping your OEMs and adding the TM-80s if you don't want the air horn. good luck
