Default Question For Those Who Have Changed Their Timing Belt?

Hi All, I have done the research and read most of the related threads but I don't remember seeing this mentioned.
I went to the Toyota dealership to purchase a Timing Belt Tensioner and he gave me something that I have not seen before or read about. The tensioner roller or pulley...I think that's what it's called (~$80.00). I told him I wanted the tensioner ($50.00). Most people suggest replacing the #1 & 2 Idler pulleys ($89.00 each) but nothing about replacing the Tensioner Pulley and my Chiltons and the FSM don't even mention it. What's the story?

Found my own answer! The service manuals refered to #1 & #2 Idler pulleys or Rt or Lft......so, I thought there were two idler pulleys and the Tensioner.....couldn't quite figure out how the tensioner applied the tension through a rubber boot but now I know and there is only two pulleys. One Idler pulley and one Tensioner pulley. I almost have all the parts. Thanks for looking!

Maybe I misunderstood your last post, but there are two pulleys and the tensioner...at least on my 2001. Here's what I purchased when I changed my timing belt in May '08:

13568-09070 timing Belt ($39.25)
13503-0F010 idler S/A, Timing ($60.91)
13540-50030 tensioner Assy ($38.56)
13505-0F010 idler S/A Timing ($60.64)
90311-38065 seal, type cam 2X ($11.12)
90311-A0001 seal, type crank ($6.86)
16100-5927583 water pump ($98.26)
16572-0F010 lower radiator hose ($17.10)
16571-0F010 upper radiator hose ($11.10)
96761-24019 o-ring ($2.25)
96761-35035 o-ring ($2.53)
16346-50010 gasket, thermostat (2.94) (Already had thermostat)

You are right! I could have worded my post better. Where did you get those prices....I'll bet not at the toyota dealership. I purchased the Tensioner at the dealer and it was $48 after a $10 discount and the pulleys are $79 each after the same discount off each. You must have done your own work. How did it go?

I got all my parts at Champion Toyota over the phone. Much better prices than I could have gotten locally (Albuquerque, NM) and because they're a dealer, all of the parts are Toyota OEM. I believe TundraSolutions members get a discount. Call 1-800-327-2087 and ask for Shannon Brookshire.

As for the work -- yes, I did it myself. It was a long job, but very satisfying once it was done. Plus, my Toyota dealer wanted $1050 to change out everything I wanted changed and even after buying a couple of special purpose tools like a spanner wrench and a pulley holding tool, I did it for less than half of that.

Thanks for the number and info. I do have one question if you can remember. What color/type of threadlocker compound did you use on the idler pulley bolts? I purchased the Permatex medium strenght blue but after reading the back of the package at home, it mentioned using the high temp. red for idler bearings etc. Thanks!

According to the FSM, you are supposed to "apply adhesive 2 or 3 threads of the pivot bolt. Adhesive: Part No. 08833-00080, Three Bond 1344, Loctite 242 or equivalent." I used Permatex Threadlocker Blue because the part number is #242000.

Is the spanner wrench and the crank pulley holding tool the only 2 special service tools that are required? What about a puller?

A 2-jaw or 3-jaw gear puller will work to remove the crank pulley off.

I have been told by people who have replaced their timing belts that the Crankshaft pulley did not require a puller to remove, just a few taps and a pull.

It probably depends on several factors. Mine was tight initially and I used to puller to get it started, but was then able to pull it off by hand.

Still there Daves or anyone else who has replaced their Timing Belt? Did you remove the Oil Cooler line which crosses in front of the #3 Left hand Timing Belt Cover from the Throttle Body to the Oil cooler? It is in the way of the fan bracket but the FSM does not talk about removing it. Thanks!

In my 2001 FSM, removal of the cooler line is step 10h and the removal of the cover iteslf is 10g, but I have a sticky note that I left in my manual that says to remove the oil cooler pipe before removing the LH No. 3 timing belt cover.

Thanks! It's next and I agree it should have been before.......wow.....alot of parts...parts...parts but taking my sweet time. The generator is way down the line of parts to remove, but I bet I would have been able to remove it and the drive belt tensioner right along with the PS pump. Any more helpfull hints?
