Default Preventative maintenance recommendations, '02 Tundra

My vehicle: '02, 4.7L V-8, 2WD, ABS brakes, automatic transmission. Current mileage…about 58k. This truck has not seen hard use like trailer pulling. I've changed the oil/oil filter and air filter regularly and replaced the front brake pads. Also cleaned the MAF and throttle body about every 10k. I know that the timing belt is due for replacement at 90k, and I know that the parking beak needs adjustment. The location is Kansas, so it gets cold in the winter, so that's a consideration. What else?

Replace the serpentine belt because of age?
Flush transmission or just drain and replace fluid?
Flush radiator? Replace radiator cap?
Drain and replace differential oil?

I've owned the truck since it was new. It runs fine….just want to keep it that way.

I was wondering about the need to replace the timing belt because of age as well. Mine is an 03 that has 26,000 miles but I was wondering if the age of the vehicle would warrant the need to replace it. Based on what I've read from people who have replaced their own timing belts and saying they looked brand new, I am now thinking no.

Timing belt is 90k or 7 years. They are probably good in both cases but a failure can cost 5k it is your call.

Toyota Parts and Service
This link above will tell you what Toyota recommends and when they require an item to be replaced. Just so happens Timing belts are a mileage/time change item like numerous other items and for the obvious reason that rubber gets old , hard, brittle and can fly apart at or near their suggested time change interval. With the V8 being an Interference engine you can take the chance if you are willing to pay for the results! Toyota will step up to the plate if it fails during the drive train warranty period. 90K Miles or /72 months which ever comes first is what the Dealership will tell you on a timing belt!

Personally I would address the timing belt and serpentine belt service first and foremost since you're right on the time interval on the timing belt at seven years (84 months). Better safe than sorry.

If you have the timing belt replaced it's only practical to replace the serpentine belt and avoid labor since this belt has to come off anyway to access the timing belt. While you're at it, an examination of the water pump, cam seals and other serviceable items would be wise. Once you've recovered from this expense move on to the transmission.

Has your transmission been serviced before by Toyota? If not I would have Toyota do it since R&R of the pan and cleaning the screen is a major DIY task. Then later you can do your own drains and refills or do the flush as outlined in several older threads on the subject.

I've performed the flush twice already on my 2001 and it's not rocket science. Just pay attention to details. I highly recommend synthetic ATF if you do the flush.

Best of luck on keeping the Tundra rolling.
