I'm trying to take the drum off the rear, I need to loosen the star adjuster, the drum won't move. I'm using a pick to try to move the lever out of the way so I can rotate the star wheel with a screwdriver. The problem is I can't seem to move the lever out of the way. What is the best way to approach this? I tried going in from the top of the star wheel, and under it. My manual says to go under it, but this shows going over and behind: Toyota Tundra Brake FAQ - Maintenance and Adjustment

This might be an obvious question, but is it the star adjuster over-tightened that is keeping the drum from moving, or do you still have the e-brake engaged?

I am in the middle of a rear brake job on a 2006 Tundra. To loosen the adjuster I used a small screwdriver, approx 4" long 1/8 blade to lift the spring out of the way & then I used another longer screw driver to turn the wheel. Check out the brake forum, there are several good procedures with pictures showing the rear brakes setup.
The best way to visualize what the position of the star adjuster and release are to each other is to go to the following post, open the attached PDF, and scroll to the last page and picture. It gives a really clear image of the assembly. You can see the adjuster access hole behind the adjuster wheel.

Thank you! That is exactly what I needed. I was just randomly poking back there trying to move that lever. I kept hitting that spring thinking it was the lever moving. This will help immensely.

The drums on my 04 have an M15 threaded hole for this. I just drive the bolt and off the drum goes...
Got them off, thanks for all the help. I can't believe how the drums are so rusted. Last week I did the front brakes, same thing, the calipers and rotors were so rusted, and I replaced those just a year ago!
Is rust contagious? It seems to spread from the frame to everything else under there. The inside of the drums are scored, I notice the bellcranks are seized. Those are rusted too. Geez.
Yes, lots of salt. I was talking to the parts manager at the local Toyota dealer and he said he sees this problem on all models and brands around here. Something to do with a more corrosive form of road salt introduced a few years ago, and the cheap metal in use around the world today.
I'm thinking of power washing the entire underside, then using that anti-rust paint to coat the entire bottom. Seems as if it's not stopped, this will happen every year.
yep. our trucks rear drums comes with 2 holes and you can use 2 bolts to remove them.
Thats really only good if the drum is seized to the hub. If the shoes are worn into the drum or they are over-tightned, you still need to back off the adjuster.
