finally got my (new to me) tundra double cab fixed up : )
hello all - i've been a lurker on the forums here for years, dreaming of the day that i would be able to buy a tundra. well, that day finally came. i hadn't planned on actually buying one until next spring, so i had been tracking prices on craigslist, cars.com, autotrader, etc. at the end of this last may, i hopped on craigslist one day and saw an '06 double cab 4x4 with only *8000* miles on it. i couldn't stop thinking about it all that day and night, and decided to run it past the wife (aka THE BOSS) to see what she thought. she thought it a good idea, but neither of us had ever even been near a tundra, much less driven one. that night, we went to the local dealership to test drive one; the only one they had was one that had been traded in that day and was still pretty dirty. we instantly fell in love with the truck, and i contacted the seller of the craigslist truck as soon as i got home. turns out everyone who had contacted him was skeptical of the mileage, but i just had a gut feeling that this was one of those hidden gems that you almost never see. turns out i was right! i flew to san francisco the next week, picked it up, and drove it back home to reno.
here she is when i picked her up:
since then, it's been a drawn-out process getting her fixed up how i wanted, but it's finally complete. she's now got the following, and i *love* it (even more than i did before!):
Camburg UCAs
Camburg coilovers set to ~2.5" of lift
Wheeler's 1.5" AAL plus Bilstein 5100s in the rear
Custom Snugtop shell
Stubbswelding HD-SKO rock sliders
99 4Runner Limited wheels
1.5" Spidertrax wheel adapters all around
255/85r16 Toyo Open Country MT (IE, 33.5" tires)
with the above mods, i measured out that i have 18" of clearance between the ground and the bottom of my sliders (slightly less to the cross-member that i think is the lowest-hanging part underneath) - *perfect* for chukar hunting and mild off-roading : )
here are the pics:
thanks for all of the info and insight from everyone on the board, it's been the inspiration for everything in my truck : )

Whew! I'm liking those rockslidersAll I could ever find is Westin's bars that go wheel to wheel like that. Sold my 06 Tundra though...but that mistake is in the process if being corrected. If I ain't snooping too much, what did you pay for the sliders? Are they very useful in getting in and out? (Mommy is 4'10'')

yes, the sliders are *awesome*, richard's work is amazing. his slider page is here: RockSliders. i got the HD-SKOs, and since a double-cab requires the most steel, they were at the high-end of the range he lists on his site. they were *totally* worth it : ) one of the reasons i actually went with the HD-SKO model is specifically because they stick out a little more than the standard model - my wife is 5'1" (similar to the problem you face!), and she wanted a step of some sort. there's no way i was going to dump $ into running boards or nerf bars that might get hung up or trashed on a hunting trip, so i went with these. i had to paint them and have them welded on at a local shop, but they turned out to be perfect (well at least for me - wifey still says it's too high of a step, but i didn't want to lose out on any clearance). the complaints about the step get made up by the fact that she loves the truck in general ; )

p.s. based on a recommendation from somewhere, i went to walmart and in the RV section found some "traction tape" that i stuck down the length of the sliders on both sides. if you look carefully, you can see the line of it in the picture. that has been magic stuff, giving lots of traction even when the sliders are wet...

any rubbing issue with those 33.2 with a f/2.5in?
the problem with the stock wheels is that they were 17", while i wanted specifically to run the 255/85r16 size that i have now (based on the article here: Expeditions West: BFG 255/85 R16 MT KM, 33 x 10.5). i think the stock 16" teardrop wheels are ugly, and i've *always* liked the look of these 4runner wheels ;P when i initially got the tires, i didn't have spacers; the tires rubbed the frame a little bit on each side at full-lock, but nowhere else. after i put the spacers on, they didn't rub the frame any more, but they caught the plastic fender liner and the pinch-weld right at the rear of the fender opening. a quick trim of the plastic liner with some tin snips and a beating-back of the pinch-weld with a sledge took care of the problem. i took it out and stuffed each of the wheels afterward, and i won't have a problem on either side now when i am out on the trail...
Re: finally got my (new to me) tundra double cab fixed up : )
I love those rock sliders. I am about an hour from Susanville where they are made. I have the Westin wheel to wheel and wondered if I would get into trouble with them. I was on a pot hole (serious) filled dirt road a few weeks ago and hit one bracket. No damage but saw the potential for problems. I would pull them off but my daughter is 5 and liking to be independent... getting in and out of the truck is way important, as is closing the door herself. So, can't really get rid of those Westin's yet. That is one nice setup!
