Well I had a 2000 Limited and now have a 2001 bought it new. Have taken very good care of it and I will be going on my 2nd tranny at 140k. Yes they got a problem because its not my driving or abuse. Starts with some violent shifts to 2nd under mild acceleration and then you get metal in your fluid.
I bought my 01 at 95K miles, had the abrupt shifting start to be a problem about 10K miles later. Was told by the dealership that a new (read: $3500) transmission install is required at about 120K miles.
I now have over 235K on the SAME tranny. Only did the 12 quart synthetic DIY flush with a new filter/gasket replace at near 205K. Abrupt shift all gone since!
i just bought my truck. it is a 2000, with 129k on it... although it's nothing major, i sense a slight roughness in shifting from 1st to 2nd. i myself am pretty paranoid when it comes to vehicles, i pay very close attention to detail so it is possible that i am over analyzing.
planning on doing a synthetic swap, since as far as i know this trans fluid has never been changed, a filter and the gasket as well... i think if all us gen 1 guys are really on top of this trans fluid change every 20k or so, posts like this will disappear heh, who knows... good luck
Think again, Rolando. Much of it seems to be luck. I work with a guy, who is the most anal freak I know. He had his 01 Sequoia's trans fluid changed about every 25k, only to be rewarded with sudden tranny death at 65k. No warning whatsoever. It was fine one day, and had to be towed from the side of the road the next. I was thinking like you, until I witnessed his misfortune. I'm gonna take good care of mine. If it dies, I'll replace it with an upgraded one and motor on. It's paid for and there is no new truck on the market that makes me think I've "gotta have it". I like the GMC's, but I'm not buying a union-buyout, Obamamobile. I love my truck!

I just bought my '03 AC this summer with 97k on it and shifts smooth as silk.
From what was told by the techs that checked it out (not the dealer where I bought it), the tranny got beefed up slightly in 03 and a change again in 05 and most of the failures are in the 00-02's.

190,000 miles and going strong in my 2000 Tundra longbed V8 4x4. Transmisson shifted rough after going to 285 tire. One bottle of Auto Rx and DIY flush and just as smooth as she was when she rolled of the assembly line 10 years ago.
This year I started towing a 5K lb RV on the weekends with my '03. Mine has always shifted like a truck so with 110K miles on it I am already thinking about a new tranny so I don't end up stuck somewhere with the camper in tow. That is unless I can convince my wife we need an '09 DC 5.7L with supercharger to make it across Donner Pass. (so far she ain't buying it) But so far so good with scheduled fluid changes. Personally I would never flush a tranny unless upgrading to synthetic oil. Seen too many vehicles killed from overeager maintenance.

I have a 2000 Tundra 4x4 V8. I have had it for ten years with 178k miles on it so far. I havent had any problems with it shifting really hard from first to second with a bang like some people have described on here. Sometimes after driving in town for a long time, it will seem to shift a little harder than usual though. I'm planning on flushing the ATF as described in the DIY with a synthetic ATF. Thinking of using Royal Purple as I can easly get it at my local car parts store. I figured I would do it for the peace of mind. I think I will also install an external filter too.
