Default 2000 Tundra auto transmission slips in gears 1 & 2

I have 114k miles, 4.7L - Tundra 4x4 w/access cab.

The problem is my trans slips very badly in first, bad in second, but third and fourth seem ok.
When I drop it down to D1 it gets going no problems at all. So once rolling 5mph+ I can usually shift up to 2 or D and be on my way, till the next stop light. Then repeat.

So far I've replaced trans filter and did a complete power flush with 13qts of ATF. This seemed to help at first but later the problem returned. Then I tried a whole bottle of Lucas transmission fix: STOPS SLIP. The additive seemed to be helping at first but a week later it's back to having issues again.

So I understand the OD planetary gears may be the likely cause here? Anyone care to explain?
Also, I'm considering rebuilding the trans myself and replacing gears or whatever needs replaced. That or search out a better idea?
Anyone here have access to the exploded diagrams for this auto trans? I'd like to see what kind of job this is and what all's involved before making this decision. FSM might be of help here. Especially to troubleshoot the symptoms.

Thanks in advance.

One of the tests that I have read about is to unplug the connector on the drivers side rear of the transmission case, that will of course set codes for solenoids etc. but should allow you to manually shift the transmission and determine if the problem is mechanical or electrical. You may luck out and be able to drop the pan and just replace one (or more) of the shift solenoids and not the whole transmission. Worth a shot before condemning the unit and you can disconnect the battery to clear the codes once you have tried it if you do not have access to a scan tool (I usually pull a terminal from the battery, wait a few minutes, turn the key on, then off and reconnect the terminal, when my scan tool is not handy). I too thought about attempting a rebuild but the torque converter is impossible to drain/clean thoroughly and the front pump on the trans. is often chewed up by the shavings as well as the planetary for the o/d. I picked up a used (15k mile) 2003 transmission for about $750 INCLUDING the truck freight, a standard rebuild kit was around $300 plus the planetary , torque converter and other hard parts that are likely to be damaged I changed my mind, good luck with whatever you end up with. some auto rx should be all you need..lol....there is a sale going on.....do a search on the tranny. I've seen many pictures of the mess that is left behind. I didn't think the Luca's would work wonders either but i did hear that it worked. just goes to show you, snake oil I say, they are all snake oils.....

When you replaced the filter, did you check the magnets on the bottom of the pan? If the planetary gears exploded due to, IMO, a bearing failure then, it will probably have looked like mine. Here's a few pics of the bottom of the pan, and the gears. Unless, you know transmissions, literally, I wouldn't do. Parts from the dealer alone will cost you more than a built one from John at IPT trans.

Mike - thanks for posting the pics. Is that the planetary gear? Holy crap it's all chewed up! Just curious did you hear any grinding at all?
When I dropped the pan my magnets had a lot of fuzz and only a few very tiny grits, not bad IMO. It's quite possible my PG is still in good working order.

I'm gunna try that test Scott recommended. Unplug the ecu cable from the trans and drive the truck in each gear shifting manually. I'll post my results once that's done.

The way I see it Auto RX is more less a band-aid rather than a permanent solution. I've tried the Lucas Stop Slip and all that did was thicken my fluid. The results seemed promising at first but in no way was this a permanent fix for my problem. Since I can't justify using additives every week I'm forced to locate and fix the problem once and for all.

Yup the PG. Only sign was the teeth shattering shifting.
