Default Re: Explain this

ahh. the good old octane confusion. aside from my tundra, ive got 2 bugs in my garage. one has a stock 1600 motor and the other has a powerful 2074 motor with 12:1 compression. i have to run 91 octane (california) in the race motor or it knocks like crazy. on the other hand my stock motor runs like crap on 91 octane and comes to life on 87. seems to have a lot to do with the compression as the static timing is 7.5 degrees btdc on both motors and both run the same distributors. i know they are totally different from our beloved 4.7s but the idea is your motor doesnt really need high octane. i agree my tundra seems smoother on premium but i doubt the power difference is significant enough to really notice if you tried it pepsi challenge style. as for mpg, too many variables to be real accurate. a windy day is all you need to lose mpg.
