Question Tundra supercharger

I was wondering if there were any aftermarket companies that make SC's for gen one tundras? And possibly turbo as well. Any info would be apreciated. Thanks, DR805

there is a trd 4.7 supercharger on ebay right now. also there is one on craigslist that comes with headers limited slip differential, unichip, and the supercharger has been completely rebuilt. i dont think there is any turbo out specifically for the tundra. you could have a custom turbo made for about $4,500 if a shop does it or cheaper if you make it your self.

Does the '03-04' supercharger work on the '99-'02 motors though?

the supercharger its self will fit the difference is in the ECU so if you use a 2003-2004 supercharger on a 99-2002 you would need to use a unichip or a URD fuel and timing control unit. its becouse of the fly by wire throttle body that the ECU's are different.

Gotcha. Thanks for that.

I knew the latter models were drive-by-wire. I didn't realize that's where the difference was in regards to the S/C but it does make sense.

Funny. In my overzealous days in the past, I was also looking for an S/C to fit my '01 but couldn't find one, but did see a few S/Cs for the latter years which I passed up thinking they wouldn't work.

Knowing this now kinda rekindles a fire. Hmm.

bulldog, obviously you have had experience on this subject, but do you have any advice on the "weak piston rod" issue that has been discussed? I know some have used the SC for 200,000+ miles with no issues and some have had issues. Some have replaced their I-beam rods with H-beams. What do you think about it?

before i added the URD fuel and timing control unit i was pinging like crazy if i stepped on it. but as long as i drove it normal it was ok. if you are able to upgrade rods that would be the good thing to do but you will still need a good tune for it. If you are tuned properly you should be perfectly fine with the factory boost levels. Normally the trd supercharger runs 6 psi. i put a aftermarket (smaller) pulley on from the start that bumped it up to 10psi and URD controller and it did great. i think the biggest reason people are breaking rods with the supercharger is because the trd controller was not programmed properly for the supercharger. when i bought the supercharger i installed a wideband 02 sensor and my air/fuel ratio was way lean it was running 17-18 to 1 when i stepped on it, when it should have been about 13.7 to 1
a good tune can do alot for the life of the engine.

Ok I see, would the TRD piggyback cause some sort of pre-detonation or something? Because I can imagine that being really the only thing to really break a rod....But if you were running 10 psi for 5 years on a good tune, that sounds pretty solid to me!!! Thanks for the help.

yea some of it was from pre ignition and some of the ping was from not having enough fuel.

There are many different rumors about weak rods etc.

I've upgraded my TRD piggyback to Unichip, and also upgraded pulley to 10psi. I've abused my truck big time. I got my redline raised 6,000+ rpms = (unichip) and running 2x much boost. I think at 6000rpm WOT actual boost is around 11psi. About month ago, I was racing new VortecMax and that guy had no chance at all, but at the end I've heard strange noise comming from my engine. And guess what that was? Bend 2cyl rod. Now all of the parts came in (new rods from 2000 1UZ, new gaskets, new head bolts, new crank bearings, new timing belt, new water pump and few other things). Very soon will have stronger bottom end on my truck

Damn tinik that is impressive. It seems as though running at stock boost levels with proper tune works reliably. I want to supercharge my 2003 BAD! lol.
Are they still servicable in every way and are the maintenance parts available ?(bearings, etc.)

yea they are still serviceable just not by trd. you send it off to the company that made it in the first place and the can service the whole thing or you can order the parts from them and do it your self.
