don't post much here, but thought i would seek some advice on performance. The fam and I took a road trip last weekend, went through the PA and hit some monster climbs. I know our 06's are only rated at 271/315ish, but I thought it my tundra had a bit more balls in the mountains. I pushed my 06 up the mountains, but on several occasions got passed up my lots of gas chevys and fords and especially those diesel pushers. I couldn't believe how easy they made it look and my tundra was screaming and shifting and scearming some more just to make it over the top. I have stock 06 DC 4WD. Now granted I don't expect much, but I thought it would take us over the hills a bit easier. Any upgrades I can do to avoid future embarrassment besides just holding the accelerator to the floor for 3000ft?
I dont know, man. Ive been through some pretty hilly parts in my '05 with 33" tires on it and never had any complaints. I have exhaust and an intake, but I dont see that making a big enough difference to where I would be "embarassed". I guess your truck could be geared differently, also. Do you keep o/d off when in the hills?
And maybe those guys had it to the floor to make it look so easy, you never know. The diesels drfinatley have an advantage because of the massive low end torque, but none of those gas jobs should be embarassing you on the hills.

More air in, more air out, and upgrade the plugs for hotter spark. There are all kinds of upgrades you can do, but those are the most basic, simple, and least expensive. I have been driving through the mountains in NC a good bit lately and have had no issues whatsoever.
Make sure your truck is running properly. Dirty air filters, crappy oil, tranny fluid, fuel lines etc... Its amazing how much basic maintenance can help keep your truck running smoothly.
But hey, if you got the money, go for headers, exhaust, chip etc.

Also remember that our motors are designed to run at higher RPMs than the pushrod crowd. That's why yours has variable valve timing.
If you left the cruise control on, it does tend to downshift and make the motor rev moreso than temporarily cancelling the cruise and using your right foot to modulate the throttle.

I live in serious mountain country and have no problem pulling the "uphill for an hour" passes around here.....Just went on a road trip last weekend with 4 people and gear on board and passed everything on the road. Maybe you're not used to driving in the mountains....but if you think you're going to do like 75mph+ @ elevation, in a crew cab 4x4 truck, without using lots of RPM, shifts and fuel....think again. Those guys passing you just had it more floored. Let it do its thing....you won't break it.
More details please.....was your truck struggling to maintain speed? Was it unable to go the speed limit? Stock tires? Towing/Hauling anything?
For starters, PA mountains are NOT that steep. I've never encountered one big enough to make a Tundra feel slow. It probably won't pull it in OD but neither will most anything else short of a diesel. But it shouldn't slow you down and you shouldn't have to hold your foot to the floor just to maintain anything short of crazy speeds. You either have something wrong with your truck or running huge tires, or something. What's your truck run 0-60? Mine will click off right at 8 seconds which is what most of the mags showed on our generation.
just drove back from hunting in the mountains in nc. was flying past people. start in 3rd gear till bout 35mph then shift into drive. headers will do miracles for you. has lacking power with 35s put on jba headers and got all of it back and more. exhaust helps alot also. could regear. enless options

Do it! I wanna watch him crawl. It's been a while since I've gotten a good whiff of burnt rubber.

i use to have to cross the mountain on route 33 headed toward harrisonburg in VA 2 to 3 times daily for work with a full load of work equipment in the back. The only vehicles that passed me were the sportbikes and sports cars. 2000 tundra killed the 05 ford i drove before.
So, based on all these replies, I would start looking for a problem with your truck. Maybe brakes dragging, dirty MAF, Air filter, fuel filter, or many other sensors. These trucks are not dogs at all, so theres gotta be something wrong if its having trouble. Is your check engine light on by chance?

I have to agree with the majority of the people here that the Tundra is pretty fast compared to other trucks. I have driven an 08 GMC and it was not as responsive and fast compared to the Tundra that we have.
I had no trouble going up mountains in my '06. I was driving in the Winter time and going to Alaska.
