Default Purchase advice?

Hey everybody. Ive been in the market for a good used truck. Locally I found a '00 extra cab 4x4 with the 4.7 engine. It has high mileage (210,xxx) but seemed to run super smooth. It was cold out and it started right up with no hassle. With the engine running and the hood popped it was silent, no odd noises at all. Paint and interior were clean as well.

They are asking $4,900 for it, sound like a fair price for the miles? I have had a honda with close to 300,000 miles and family members have had toyotas with over 200K so im not too worried about the mileage. I hear the timing belt is a common replacement item....anything else I need to look for? Like I said the truck was clean, looks like a great purchase.

Thanks in advance for the help!

That is a lot of miles, but the price seems close to right. The transmission is a potential weak link on some of these trucks, but when they fail, it seems to be without warning, so I'm not sure there is anything to really check on it. You hear of some failing at 60K, and others running forever without issues. Engine problems are rare. It is a calculated risk, based on your budget. A couple of grand more may buy one with half the miles. I'd look at rust, service history, etc.

Check the "Tundra frame rust recall" post before you buy

Wow, kinda sucks hearing about the rust issues everybody is having. I went and looked it over again. The frame looks great. I live in a very dry climate so rust usually isn't an issue. The bed is also in great shape so it must not have hauled anything.

Hopefully I will be able to pick it up tomorrow or early next week. She runs down the road nice, you wouldn't ever guess it has that many miles on it. Pics will be soon to follow!

Good luck. I drive a Celica with almost that many miles daily. I'd fire her off and confidently drive anywhere in a moment's notice. Just keep a little repair money aside and enjoy the ride.

I have a 00 and I love it, but make sure you check not only the frame but cross members, above spare tire, leaf springs etc.... For sure get the history and do the timing belt water pump if not done. Great trucks just do a triple check on rust

HotApple,
I love my 2000 TRD AC 4x4. I've got 164,000 miles on it now and it runs like a clock. What I would be sure to do is if you don't know the timing belt history, get that done. Second, get the coolant system flushed. With that many miles, I guess my thought would be that what happens with the tranny happens with the tranny. Mine is as smooth as butter as from mile 1, but I know it could go out without notice tomorrow. I also know, that if that happened I would fork out the money to put a new tranny in it. With that many miles do a few drain and fills of the tranny, don't take it in for a "flush". I'd offer $4500 and see what happens. I have NO rust on my frame, ya 9 years out! Even if this next winter and salt season produce it, there is nothing I can do per say. You in SoCo have no need to really be concerned, you don't deal with salt like we do in the frozen Tundra of Wisconsin.
