Default Torn Steering Shaft Seal

I know this topic has been debated a bunch, so please don't kill me for asking as I did use the search tool. I'm looking for a good DIY write up or at least some pics on how the steering shaft is removed to replace the torn boot. I'm aware that you have to "seatbelt" the steering wheel, remove the 3 bolt for the boot in the cabin. I'm not clear on disconnecting or marking the steering shaft. Honestly, I'm a bit worried as my truck has seen 7 years of New England weather....not sure what I am getting myself into here....

I did it but it was a while ago. I think I also locked the wheels by taking the key out and turning the wheels till straight and locked. It was kind of a pain to get things loose around the splined sp? part near the bottom of the shaft. Made a big difference for me, and end the end my manifold was cracked as well. Now truck is quiet. I remember searching here and finding a post that helped quite a bit, sorry I don't have more advice.

Thanks. Looks like after I lock the steering wheel, the hardest part is removing the two rusted bolts holding the splined steering shaft into the rack. I believe I need to mark the splined shaft as this is what needs to be centered again when re-installed. I can see pulling that shaft out is going to be a real PITA after 7 years. Good times!
