2002 tundra trans- swap to 03 or 04

Ok i have an 02 tundra v8 2wd trd package. my transmission went out on saturday. Looking for a replacement now. I found some 03 or 04 models. Can anyone tell me if they are direct fit or if toyota changed something. I think it is the planetary for overdrive that went out because I can still drive the truck but there is no overdrive function at all. And i did have some weird noise and vibrations that i felt before it stopped working.

I put a 2003 transmission in my 2000, direct bolt/plug in install no funny issues or codes currently at 2500 miles since install (mine is a 4x4, 4.7 for what it's worth) can't say for the '04 though. Make sure to run synthetic fluid and either flush out your old cooler and lines or take this opportunity to uprade to a new larger cooler. Good Luck, Scott

thanks scott. I found some good deals on 03-04 transmissions so hopefully everything would be a direct swap and i think they upgraded the planetaries in 03 and later so hopefully no more problems with them. I am definetly gonna take a look at a larger cooler. I wish it would have waited about 2 more years so i could have had the truck paid off before it went out lol.

03 is the year when they upgraded the overdrive planetary stuff. Just curious, how many miles on the 02 when the tranny punted?

139k miles on it right now, i have drove it about another 150 since it crapped out but still shifts fine just no OD

i have an 02 tundra trd and the tranny locked up . it was fixed by installing an 04 tranny. they have different connections for the speedometer. u will have to use the rear housing as well as all the sensors including the rod from the 02 tranny and use it

continued....so u need to reuse 02 rear housing onto the 04 tranny or else speedo and cruise control wont work and a bright check engine light wi' be on

cool so the 04 trans just needs the rear housing swapped out to make it work along with the shift linkage and sensors, drive shaft the same as the 02 though?

no not the shift linkage buddy...... an 04 tranny will bolt to an 02 as it is and the truck will drive and shift no problems... problem is that there will be no connector for the speedo harness to plug into the 04 tranny and there will be no speedometer function and no cruise and the check engione light will be on till its fixed..

this is what you do as i did to make the 04 tranny work on my 02 v8 tranny,,,

remove the tranny from the truck,,,

now on the 02 tranny that you removed, the rear housing about 6 to 10 inches long must be removed from the 02 tranny ( 4 bolts holding it locked tighted from factory, these sukers are almost welded in there you need good sokets and lots of leverage) as well as a rod inside there..... youll see what I meAn once you take it apart,,,,,,

you take that rear housing that you removed carefully from the 02 tranny along with a rod that youl find inside and you must installl this onto the 04 tranny.... if you dont swap this piece out you will not have cruise control and no speedometer and youl have a bright yellow chek engine light staring at you.... any questions ask...

cool thanks Computer Tech. I should have plenty of good sockets laying around here lol. I dont think I have enough extensions to reach the top bolts to take out the tranny. Oh well gotta spend more money when Snap on gets here this week lol.
