Default Explain throttle body cleaning to a rookie....

my truck 2002 V8 limited TRD.

Truck has plently of power will not hesitate it will move from a dead stop even with some 285s if you get on the accelerator and you can feel the power... I akuired my truck at 75 thousand miles and now has about 129 thousand miles..... since i got it I have not cleaned the throttle body....

How do you clean it?? step by step info???? im a rookie at cleaning it... it will be my first time so I need simple but detailed instructions you know KISS

You have to remove the throttle body from engine to clean it,???

I am comfortable doing an oil change, and rotating tires on my lifted tundra....

I wana do this myself and not get raped for 70 dollars from dealer when I know i can do a better job....

do I have to remove the intake tube and wash the inside too I just want my truk to run its best,,,,,

cleaning your intake tube wont help you much unless its dirty. if you do, be sure to remove your mass air flow sensor. as for the throttle body, its best to remove it but its not as simple as unbolting it. you gotta relive the fuel pressure first. to do it right is a long process to write out. i did it lazy style, remove intake tube, carefully open the butterfly plate. hold it open and spray a little tb cleaner in it, not alot as its not combustable so its bad for your motor. this is why its best to remove the tb. now after spraying, scub the inside with a toothbrush. you dont want bristles goin in there either so be careful. next take a lint free rag and wipe out the residue. most of it is behind the butterfly. again this is the lazy way. do it the right way if you can, it was +100 outside when i did mine so i did it this way, you are in san diego it doesnt get above 90. put it back together and expect an ugly noise when you initially start it up. some tb cleaners will cause smoke to come out your tailpipes. be sure to get one thats ok for cat converters. i personally dont believe that a lil dirt hurts your performance much here but i was only at 80k.

Here's a very helpful link on the subject: Cleaning the throttle body

Go to Post #127 by Highwaylizard. The pictorial is by Alan so thanks to him for his efforts. And thanks to Highwaylizard for bringing it to our attention.

The TS search function can yield a lot of good info if one takes the time to use it.

When I did mine a couple of months ago (took it off truck) I had trouble getting one of the lower bolts out. It screwed up the thread a bit and I had to chase the threaded hole with a tap to get it cleaned up. I did not let the engine cool down compleatly and I'm wondering if the bolt and the intake cooled at different rate and this caused a bind of some sort, or was it dirty when put in at factory or something. The other one came out with no issue.

It is an easy procedure and does not require removing the TB to do a good job.

Definitely use the search function...I probably used that very same writeup back in the day, when I first did it on my truck.

I just drilled a small hole on top of the intake tube (after the MAF sensor toward the top of the radiator where it makes a 90 degree turn to the throttle body). While the engine running I sprayed cleaner in there. Once done got one xmas tree plastic plug and plugged the hole up. I also removed the intake tube from the throttle body and used a small rag soaked with cleaner to finish the job. You may need a screw driver to keep the butterfly open. Also used Seafoam to clean the intake by sucking it up at the PCV valce. Of course once you do this you will need to change your oil and plugs.
